Hemprider:

What do you die of when you drink it? Dehydration. Ponder this for a moment. Salt has such a dehydrating effect that you can drink a gallon of water laced with it and still die of dehydration.
The arguments made here are not about the toxicity of sodium, per se, but about concentrations. It's really about the sea water not being isotonic with the body's fluids. Nearly anything necessary becomes deleterious if the concentration is high enough: oxygen, CO2 (necessary for respiratory impulse, but hypercapnia is also a problem), sodium...there's a balance somewhere between none and way too much.

I am happy you do not need to supplement during your rides, but hyponatremia is a very real problem affecting marathon-type athletes who replace fluids but not sodium. It just so happens that NaCl is the most abundant source of sodium for us.

.... and of course it is a very real problem for CF carriers and herein lies the problem which I have raised. Over 99% of the 4% of us who carry the CF gene are unaware of it. Those who would push their no salt philosophy on others stand a chance of killing a CF carrier - there is a very good reason that the gene is almost non-existent in Africa - they die.

I get on average 300-500 mg of sodium a day, my bike routines consist of 1-2 hour sessions that consist of mainly hills (PV is my main training spot atm). Some how i manage to do it or maybe I'm just a big liar? lol
How can you manage to take in as little as 300mg of sodium in a day and still eat? My loaf of Health Nut bread lists 220mg per SLICE.
If I ate half a slice of bread for breakfast, half a slice for lunch and half a slice for dinner and nothing else I would be over 300mg!!! - or maybe you answered the question.
