General Cycling Discussion - Wife and I - Great ride today!

Today, my wife was able for the first time since her severe back, pain and knee problems, to do a serious (but not long) ride.

We did the Mineral Belt Trail inLeadville, CO. It is all paved, but what they do not tell you in the brochures is that there is over 1,000 feet of elevation gain, including going from 10,000 feet to 10,700 feet.

Anyway, it was a great ride - lots of historic mining stuff along the way, beautiful weather, great scenery of Mt. Elbert and other mtns (over 14,000 feet - the Sawatch Range). Not too bad for someone almost 65 yo??

Oh yes. This is a serious ride considering what your wife has been having to deal with. Heck, I'm a flatlander. Those elevations would drop me real quick and I'm only in my 40's. So glad you're beginning to get your riding partner back. I celebrate with you.

Yes, and today we were biking on the gorgeous Summit County Trail System, which is officially (and accurately) described below


Biking

More than 200 miles of off-road trails and 40 miles of paved miles connect Summit County and the local Bike Path System. The pathway links the major towns and resorts of the county, partially circumnavigates Lake Dillon, runs parallel to the Silverthorne Factory Stores, meanders through some lovely forested areas near Frisco, runs adjacent to Ten Mile Creek to Copper Mountain and even rolls right over Vail Pass (10,500 feet plus) to Vail.


Life is tough!!

Well, today we rode from Frisco to beyond Copper Mountain and back. An elevation gain of about 800 feet, including one short section of about 9% grade which I told my wife not to try, but she looked at me as if to say "Go to H*ll" and did it anyway. A total of 19 miles.

So, I kind of think that in a couple of days we will be taking on the full Vail Pass route - elevation gain of about 1,800 feet, 25+ miles round trip.

I think she is doing GREAT!!

(Met a husband and wife biking on the trail today. I pegged him at 60 or thereabouts. Looked great, as did his wife. Later learned from his friend that he was 75 yo, and I don't know about the wife.)

I'm so jealous. Copper Mtn is my favorite ski area and every year when we're in Summit County I look at the bike paths and imagine myself riding them. Usually they're snow covered but they look great.
We have a friend who used to live in Denver and he's ridden Vail Pass. It sounds pretty awesome!
