hi,

every morning when I wake up, I always eat a bowl of cereals...then, as I'm THE bigest bread lover in the world, I want to eat some slices of the loaf I just bought the day before...the question is, what should I put on it? I sometimes eat natural peanut butter, but there is WAY to much fat in it. for the jellys it contains a lot of sugar, if not only that...and I HATE bananas so I never cut slices of it to put on my toasts...

so, if I want to eat healthier for breakfast, what should I put on my toasts!?!?!? this question is killing me every morning, even more than asking myself what to wear!

I'm hoping for some creativity here!

Eggs. Scramble up some egg whites and put that on your toast.

Butter- not margarine, but Butter. It's fresh and natural and has no preservatives. Just don't slather it on.

a light amount of nut butter isn ot bad. whats the worry about some fat? as long as you don't eat too many calories of it.
hell my body can't handle any carbs at all. so I have to use fat as fuel. you should see how much nuts I eat a day. I only ride 20 miles a day and I still loose weight eating fat in my diet.

At every meal you want a good multi-grain starch, a fruit or veggie, and a protein source! Fat and protein will keep you going longer than processed starchy food, so don't be afraid of it.

So if I were you I'd put berries on my cereal, and then a nut butter and maybe a little jam (I like the kind that's just fruit, sugar, and pectin) on my toast. Tahini and almond butter are good alternatives to peanut butter, but really there's nothing wrong with a nice tablespoon of natural peanut butter for brekky!

Kippers are good. We like kippers. Marmite, though, that's the thing. Vitamins and salts for the stuff you'll sweat out on your ride. And more importnatly, its yummy.

Olive oil. Good, extra virgin, and not in large quantities. Sprinkle a bit of salt on, if you need it.

so how many calories of fat do you think is ok? I started bicycling 2-3 weeks ago intensely. I want to lose weight to help me go faster, I'm not fat but could lose a good 10 pounds.

thx

I smelled Vegemite once and it was gross, but I do like kippers, I wonder if I tried a combination of the two* on toast, I might get to like Vegemite?

*and brush my teeth 3 times after eating the smelly combination......

Ever try apple butter? Still a fair amount of sugar, but a lot less fat.

Fat does not make you fat. Caloric excess does. Don't be afraid of putting some natural nut butter on your toast. Fat is essential to healthy physical functioning, just like proteins and carbohydrates. If you're trying to lose weight, extremely low fat or no fat is not the way to go. Your body won't give up any when you're not getting any. Just stay away from trans and saturated fats, but get plenty of the healthy mono and poly unsaturated fats like you find in nuts, olive oil, flax, salmon, etc. Also, if you're eating cereal and toast in the morning, you have a bigger problem than what to spread on your bread. Eat protein, egg whites, cottage cheese, protein powder, etc. with breakfast. It's essential for retaining lean mass and in the construction of new muscle, and will keep you satiated for longer than carbs alone. Don't be afraid of any macronutrient group, you need all of them, carbs, fats, and proteins.

Toast with almond butter and honey is one of my favourites. It's soooo good and makes a really excellent pre-ride snack (especially w. banana on it, but I know you don't like it).

Natural peanut butter and jelly (Smucker's 100% fruit) blueberry=excellent pick me up before a ride. I typically eat it when I get ready to do my 15 mile bike (or run - as I'm doing this Wednesday) down to Belton Lake to get my 1 mile swim in. Pack another one for the ride home, if your riding. If your running, er - have the wife show up to swim with her and your son! and bring along another PBJ:p

Grape nuts with nanners and Silk Vanilla (1/2 a cup) are excellent for breakfast.
Oatmeal with walnuts and blueberries.

If you have to eat your toast, you could try 1 sunny-side up egg, top that with some baked beans (vegeterian style!) and some lactose free cheddar cheese:)

But then, that would be if you were me, a crazy, crazy neo-herbavore with a hatred for smoking and a lust for long distance cardo and triathalons.

I'm a huge bread lover myself... and my favorite toppings on toast are

* Cheese, especially pepperjack
* Sliced tomato
* Peanut butter and jam
* Norwegian brown cheese
* Sunny side up egg with a dash of ketchup
* Sliced banana (for a real treat, try this on top of the PB&J)
* Creme cheese and blueberry jam

Btw, I only use organic foods, except for the Norwegian brown cheese

And the all-time favorite, Amundsen family special:

Slice of whole wheat bread
top with sliced banana, and add a generous amount of sliced pepperjack cheese, then sprinkle oregano over the cheese. Bake this in an oven at 400F for about 10-12 minutes (until cheese is melted, kinda like pizza).

Fat does not make you fat. Caloric excess does.

yeah for that I know, i tend to count the calories that I eat every day and not go beyond a certain amount (around 2500-3000 when I don't ride and 3500-4000 when I do, normally around 50-60kms for a bit less than 2hrs).

I'll keep in mind this advice. For the past weeks, I've noticed loosing upper body muscles and gaining lower body muscles...the upper loss might be caused by a lack in proteins, as I try to eat as much carbs as I can (loooove bread and pastas!) and not too many proteins. Concerning the fat, I think I eat enough of it as I find it in everything I eat (even in the milk I put in my cereals!) Also, I prefer eating peanuts or cashews, my favorites, instead of peanut butter. Since there is an AWFUL amount of fat in a really small portion of nuts, I approximated my daily intake around what I should be getting, that is 70 grams.

thanks for the comments from all of you, it really helped!

btw, I just found a new jelly at my grocery store that doesn't contain any added sugar. what they use instead is a sugar substitute (5mgrs in a table spoon) instead of 4 to 10 grams of sugar in the regular jam. Not a day goes by without a slice of bread with this jelly on it!!
