Hello. I've been browsing for a little while, but this is my first post.

I was looking at getting a new crankset because I bent a few teeth on the outer chainring of my Specialized Rockhopper. I want to get a bashguard. I only have an 8 speed drivetrain and the cranksets I keep seeing say they are for 9 speed systems. Will they work with my setup? Specifically, I am looking at the Race Face Evolve DH or the Truvativ Hussefelt. I have seen the add-on bashguards as well, but unless this is my only option.. I would rather change out the crank & bb.

Here's my 05 Specialized Rockhopper. I picked it up about three weeks ago, and I love it! I've only done a few things to it so far, but here's a picture anyway.

I have an 04 model of the same bike, and it come from the factory with a square taper crank. That said, you should upgrade to a crank with an ISIS BB (such as the raceface or truvativ). It will be a lot more durable. The Hussfelt is a good crank for the money (esp online if you can install it), and I am not as familiar with the Raceface. Either one will be compatable - the cranks don't know how many gears are in the cassette they are turning. I definitely recommend the crankset upgrade, and I am sure you will enjoy this bike for a long time.

Thanks. I didn't know if the actual chain rings were any narrower on a 9 speed crankset, that's why I was asking. Yeah I can change the stuff myself. I did a frame up build on my road bike. Thanks again

I run the Hussefelts mated to a Gigapipe Team DH BB I've had NO issues with that combo.
Heck if you wanted 9 speed all you need is a 9 speed shifter, cassette, and chain. You could leave the rest as is.
The derailiuers don't care how many gears they're shifting and the total travel is the same
