Any body familiar with this? I have been suffering from this for about 2 years now. I can handle my bike rides but I have been unable to run again. Every time I try the pain comes back next morning! I'm doing some therapy, but I want to ask if it will be possible for me to run as I use to? I use to put 20 to 25 miles on trails per week. Thank you!!

i thought this was the same thing as chondromalacia. If so, i have this problem. I started doing straight leg raises a little over a week agao, 3 or 4 sets of 25 per day, and rode 1.5 hours today with no pain. also, stretching, especially the IT band and hamstring, icing, and taking an advil before you ride/run will help. Good luck

For a long time, "they" thought my husband had that. He was doing physical therapy 3x a week to strengthen all the muscles around the knee - did it for 3 months. But in the long run, it turned out he had an osteo-chondral defect (basically an injury on the femur) which was masked as P-F syndrome. Any chance you could have suffered an injury like that? It happens when the patella smashes into the femur, usually during an impact of some sort. His happened when he knocked knees with another guy while playing basketball. The second MRI finally showed it. Just a thought -y'know, to complicate things more. It required surgery to fix it.

Thanks all for your input!! Is not chondromalacia, however the straight leg raises my physiotherapist recommended have helped a bit...(less pain while going down the stairs and just feel stronger). Runners knee?...the problem is that so many things are called "runner knee". I guess with the knees everything seems possible! Well... let's see, I do have a past injury while playing soccer, but I don't think that did it. The problem might have been caused by the cast I wore for 2 months that weaken my upper leg muscles. In fact, the circumference right above my right knee is smaller than the left one. I went to a physiotherapist and confirmed this. However, I'm puzzeld to know if runners/bikers are more likely to develop this. This problem began as I started putting more focus into biking and apparently I have favored my left leg! I just hope that with the leg rises, crunch with a ball between, etc my legs I can run again!!

If it is true patella-femoral syndrome you can rehab it. You will have to start low miles on run and work up. If you can start running in the pool first you will feel like a geek but it is a good starting point to do with the rehab.
