That's the most sorry news report I've ever seen. No mention of witness, "cyclist" was visiting, late-30s, pregnant, and riding (unfamiliar roads) at 5:30 am with no identification. She cannot speak or hear, but no mention of whether this is a result of injuries or a pre-existing condition. Which part of the report helped you conclude that the driver was drunk?

The victim had no identification and was transported to OHSU.
I have a connnection at OHSU... will find out what I can.

No she was a deaf mute yea its pretty lame report but the other news oen u half to register ill reg and post what they say

A motorist struck a pregnant, deaf and mute bicyclist Thursday morning in southeast Portland and then sped off, police said.

Sky-8

The intersection of SE 82nd Ave. and Duke Street where the bicyclist was hit.

The bicyclist, who is in her late thirties, was westbound on Duke Street when she was hit by a green or gray Ford or Chevy pickup truck, said Portland Police Sgt. Brian Schmautz. It happened about 5:30 a.m. at the intersection with SE 82nd Avenue.

The victim, who had no identification with her, was transported to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital and apparently has several broken bones, Schmautz said. He didn't comment on the condition of the fetus, but described the woman's injuries as "non life-threatening."

A friend of the victim said the woman was visiting Portland and lives in California.

Witnesses told officers that a dark-colored full-sized pickup truck was seen speeding away from the crash scene.

Police were searching for the suspect vehicle.

I'm certainly curious, but it sounds to me, based on what little information is there, that the cyclist may have been a victim of being in unfamiliar territory, and may possible have not had the ability to hear a vehicle. There's just not enough information there to draw any conclusion about the circumstances of the accident.

Ah! That's a good bit more information. Thanks for digging.

5:30AM is still dark on the in the San Francisco area right now, I don't know if it would be dark up there, my point being, she may have been riding in the dark and if she didn't have lights etc she may have been invisible to the driver of the truck.

yea im new to using a bike to get around and had about 3 people cut me off in one day like getting ahead of me to turn right in front of me type stuff then im sitting on my comp and heard that on the tv sad to say but a week or 2 ago i probly wouldnt have evan picked up on it but im wiser now... im hoping being a bike rider makes me a better driver also... Thats also cool if you could find more info from your sources at OHSU... also im gonan do my first 20mile ride tommrow and opted to do 2 extra miles by using multi use paths instead of saving 2 miles by using roads...

Right. And depending on how the impact was made...if in fact it was made, the driver may not have even known it happened. Remember, around here, witnesses swore up and down that the "DC Sniper" was in a white van, every time someone got shot, someone saw a white van leaving the area. Too bad they were in a Caprice.

i think sunrise is 5:44 so yea you could be right but does that mean the driver can keep going? also i looked at a pic of the intersection at the kgw site and there are lights there so its wasent some dark country road..

And, what is the mental state/capability of this person who was on the bike? It's sad she has these broken bones, may take her a while to heal and be able to communicate about it. Lots of unanswered questions...... it would be cool if she got the license number but that's probably hoping for too much.

I had the same exact caprice as the sniper color and everything but i live in portland.. mayeb thats why people let me over in rush hour traffic..

and also my point is i hit a cat before and defianlty herd it so a 100+ person wouldnt make i noise i dunno i think the guy knew what happend..

I hear you, but a glancing blow...early in the morning, not enough coffee yet, maybe radio up loud, may never hear it. I'd like to find out more. It's very possible that the guy never saw her, never knew he hit her, even possible that she spooked and wrecked without the vehicle ever touching her.

lilHinault

Yep some pickups are just loud, rattly, and more so if they hit something in the road, she could have been spooked, could have been glanced, etc.

We're not trying to be cold here, I'm sure we all hope she gets better, I think most of us just have an interest in "how could this have happened" with regard to accidents so we can try to avoid them in the future ourselves.

twahl

Yeah that's my view...I mean this is safety and advocacy forum. I personally don't think that means that a cyclist is faultless in all instances. It sounds like she will recover, very good news, and hopefully the baby will be OK as well. The question is, what can be learned from the incident? We don't even have a starting point on this one yet.

Primevci

yea good point, well hopefully the guy that was there at that time in his pickup will do the right thing and call the police if he hears about the news...

With all of the technology we have today... There needs to be some sort of sensor (computer) system in these cars that report any incident to the Police (Authorities). I know it is a "big brother" approach...but lets get real here. Peoples lives are in danger. We register guns to help save lives. Why can't there be a sensor that sends data wirelessly or through a satalite link? I know there will be people that find ways around it by disabling them. However whenever you have to register for license renewal it can be tested as functioning. It is too easy to just run away. I tried getting a license number from a driver but they had those paper temp tags...(totally useless in my opinion).

Keep Cycling!

twahl

So if I back into a trash can, it gets reported? I'm not sure that the existing technology would be useful, and if it was, it would be very expensive.

Paper temporary tags are directly linked to the dealer, which immediately reports the VIN and owner information to the DMV when the plates are issued. There's no difference in accountability between them and regular plates.
