I know the bicycle industry is not as big as the car industry, but I wonder if there is a way to check if so and so company that produced bike parts or bicycles has a "green" or more friendly environmental record. We all know for example that tire manufacturing produces some nasty chemicals. So, is the case of aluminum factories. Some greases cotain mercury...and so on. So ,is there a way to be better informed as a consumer of the bicycle industry on How to make more concious purchases???

Reuse old parts and keep riding!

Since a huge number of frames are made in China, what kind of environmental regs do they have? They would have been exempt from the Kyoto treaty. Any companies here in the U.S. are supposed to meet our standards, but since many industries "get around" those regs, I imagine it might be hard to check for compliance.

Just check the company's mission statement. Some companies make it plain and cleear that they're environmentally friendly, like the Breezer Bikes.

Probably some of them suck. Probably the ones selling to Wal-Mart only because Wal-Mart has some really draconian dealings with their suppliers (buy OUR way at OUR price or we'll drive you out of biz! no kidding!)

But, all of them are less harmful than the most "green" car company (look at the way all the car sub-parts possible are made with slave labor)

I think the polution caused by the bike industry is about as bad as most other industries, because it is governed by the same economic forces. However the environmental harm can be expected to be in proportion to the weight of the product, so bikes score well in relation to cars. Bikes in general last longer than cars which is another thing in their favour.
