I need help with this. Front tire went flat due to a lot of glass in the bike lane - unavoidable. I went down hard a few miles later. Landed directly on my hip, where the leg bone connects to the pelvis. I can survive the road rash but what is this weird fluid like stuff in my leg!? The impact site is bruised A LOT but there is a this swelling of some fluid that is still there. How do I get rid of that? I've been drinking lots of water hoping to flush it out.
Any ideas?

I don't think there are many doctors here.
Have you been checked out by a doctor?
Sounds serious. Don't try nursing your injuries yourself.

Agreed. You need to get that checked out by a doc. Sounds worse than just a bad case of road rash.
I would suggest that it be a Dr who specialized in SPORTS medicine. They usually have more experience with the kinds of injuries we sustain.
In the meantime, you might try alternating hot and cold compresses to relieve the swelling.
Yowch! I once fell right on that same spot, not on a bike but on the icy sidewalk a couple of winters ago. I remember it was just before Xmas and we were shopping. I had a huge bruise for days and it was really sore. However, I didn't land at that speed. If it really is that bad, you might want to go to emergency and tell them what happened- if I fell like that I would get it looked at.

Based on personal experience I would guess you have something still under the skin like a rock, piece of glass or something. I wiped out a while back and proke open the skin on my elbo, after about a month It kept oozing and looking nasty so I was messing with it and out popped a little rock. Next day it was noticably better looking and completely healed up within the next week. It is amazing the problems a rock under your skin can cause.
If it doesn't start looking better quick You should definatley talk to a doc.

Just got back fromt he doctor's office. He was only 30 minutes late seeing me. Next time, I'm going to show up about 30 minutes late and play dumb.
Any how, he said it's a mixture of blood and syrum. All the blood rushed there because of the impact so it could help in the healing process. The blood and fluid will slowly return to the blood stream as I heal. He said I could put a compress on it.
I didn't find any debris but I'll check again tonight.
IT'S BIKE TO WORK DAY! Enjoy the commute.

Thanks for the up-date. Glald it wasn't more serious, and also glad you went to the Dr.
I hate it when you have to wait in a doc's office they dont seem to care if they are an hour late..(guess they know you will wait)
Glad its ok and will get better. funny how the body works..
What is SYRUM?. where does it come from and why is it there?

That's what the doc said. It's a combination of blood and syrum. I'm like what? I can only think that syrum is other fluid that isn't blood. I can understand why a lot of blood would flow there but it looks like my body sent too much now it won't go away. Could be other things going on inside that I don't know about. That's a funny way to put it - syrum. Maybe it's just his lack of a better word at the time. I'm getting better every day. You can bet I check my front tire air pressure often! Gotta take care of your gear so your gear will take care of you.

Cannondale,
I think this is what the Doctor meant:
Serum n. (pl. sera or serums)
1 a an amber-coloured liquid that separates from a clot when blood coagulates. b whey.
2 Med. blood serum (usu. from a non-human mammal) as an antitoxin or therapeutic agent, esp. in inoculation.
3 a watery fluid in animal bodies.

Marty,
Exactly! That's what I meant to spell (serum) but it's been a while. Doc also thought I hit my head too hard. Maybe he's right. Thanks for defining it better. Now I have a really good idea what's going on inside my leg.
Thanks!

I would suggest that you find some kind of medicine that would help and get a check up from your doctor.:)
