General Cycling Discussion - Lemond, Trek, and Klein ? all made by Trek

I was browsing a Wikpedia site and came across advice on buying a $1,000 road bike. At the end of the fairly average advice was the warning that Trek made Lemond and Klein bikes. Is this so?

Yup, kinda like GMC makes Chevy, and Ford makes Lincoln and Mercury cars. The difference here is (and somebody please tell me if i'm wrong) is that different Trek brands *generally* use differnt frame materials. Lemond is usually steel i think, trek aluminum.

Not that it is a bad thing. They are all slightly different bikes. Lemond has a different geometry and has nice steel and their Spine Design. Klein has some sweet AL bikes with wicked paint jobs and they use the SPA suspension on some of their bikes. Trek makes good bikes that everyone and their mother buys.

Nothing wrong with any of them.

It's interesting, this site posts a WARNING giving the impression that if purchasing a brand made by Trek is somehow sinister. While Trek shares certain technology between some Trek and Klein models (like their ZR9000 aluminum alloy frame), geometry varies between Trek, LeMond and Klein. Plus, LeMond is the only Trek division that offers steel frame models. Trek is a fine company that manufactures quality bikes made in the USA. Bottom line is that when you buy a Klein or LeMond, it's not a Trek with just a different logo. :rolleyes:

Does anyone ever look around and read? Does anyone ever use Google to find out things?
To not know these are manufactured under the same parent company is just lack of initiative. To not know they are different is a lack of research. LeMond is not “just steel” and the others are not just….whatever. Then to label this as a warning? If I told you there is a stop sign coming up as we road ….is that a warning or information?

What is the point to your question?

Sorry….just stating to wonder what this whole site is becoming? Help the clueless and that can’t look it up basic information that is already on the web or in another thread? Or really exchange dialog about issues that we have facts about….

Google is on my favorites, right under bike forum. Why would I ask the entire universe a specific question when I can tap into the best and brightest minds of cycling right here?

Giant makes all specialized bikes- shouldn't matter, just find the bike you like.

Actually they do state on their web-site that LeMond is a "division" of Trek.

Trek is owned by Halliburton!!!!

Owned by same parent, but very different products, at least as far as Lemond and Trek go. Rode both companies products recently and can attest that they arent the same product with a different paint job. A lot of it just comes down to feel. You are going to have to ride a LeMond, a Trek, and as many other bikes as you can in your price range and find the one that fits and feels the best to you. $1000 bikes are all going have the same level of components, but all going to feel differnt in ride quality.

You will also find common components and wheels (The Trek house brand Bontrager) on some if not most Trek, GF, LeMond and Klein.

I own both a Trek and a LeMond. They are notably different eve though they share the house brand components.

No they don't but they will soon be making some Colnagos.

True, Trek shares the almighty ZR9000 alloy used in building their 20-pound road bikes, but that's not necessarily a great thing.
I assume you realize that the majority of Treks are now manufactured overseas, including those in the OP's originally-mentioned price range.

Um, actually one of Giant's competitors, Merida, makes most of Specialized's bikes. Convenient since they own nearly half of Specialized.
