I would go to a trike with 20" wheels for one. The availablility to mount sturdy racks on other trikes with conventional wheelbase/dropout position would be the another criteria. The Pocket is great for what it was designed. Other trikes are more versatile once you step away from that limited design criteria. For example, one circumstance which could be extremely uncomfortable on a Pocket would be higher speed downhill with a substantial load on board. The trike will carry it fine, but the handling will not yield the sense of security found in a wider, longer trike. Also worth considering is indirect steering--the difference is substantial.

If you do plan limited touring with the Pocket, I would advise the use of paniers and pack heavier stuff down low.

Did I read your post correctly that you killed an EZ-3 USX in 4 months? I am currently comparing the USX and the EZ-3 SX. Can I bother you for your opinion?

That should be fine--at least pulling it. The only issue I have ever run across is whether some of the hitches work with the cupped dropouts of the pre-2005 Catrikes. I have not tried our Yakima trailer on the Pocket. It has the type of connection mechanism which is supposed to be problematic--you can only get it on if you install the wheel and trailer at the same time--NOT convenient if true. (This and interference with some internal hubs is why the newest Catrikes have the extended dropouts.) You've only to find out if the hitch works (I gathered somewhere that there are two different hitch systems?).
High speed handling with a heavy trailer could be tricky--or not. Test with caution.

Just wanted to post up that after much discussion, last week we purchased a EZ-3 USX for my wife. We were on vacation in Florida and went to Atlantic Bicycles. They had a very large selection of trikes and bents, and allowed my wife to try them all. We were about to leave when my wife saw the EZ-3 USX. After trying it out, I couldn't get her off of it! Needless to say, we said we'd take it. They shipped it up to my LBS, who is going to put it together. She is enthusiastic, and can't wait to start riding again. It's jsut funny that we had to go to Florida, to buy a trike for NYC.

I use the Burley Nomad behind my 05 Speed and it works great. A little info on the hitch though is that you will have to purchase the Burley Alternative Hitch. The hitch that comes with the trailer will not fit any Trike that I'm aware of because the chainstay angles are wrong for one, and the chainstay tubes are too large on any of the Catrikes for the standard hitch.

49 years old, riding 2006 HP Velotechnik Scorpion with 14speed Rohloff Speedhub and 60tooth chainring. Planned on getting a custom paint job this winter and even met with the painter to discussed a "scorpion theme". I have had so many compliments on the base color (RAL2000) that I decided to hold off on the paint job for the time being.

I'm also 60 years old. My Ice L trike is the best cycle I've ever had. I just got fed up with saddle soreness and arm and neck pain. Trikes are wonderful.

45. Greenspeed tandem (GTT2S). The wife doesn't ride, but the four kids LOVE it! I Captain, 12 yr old boy Stoker, 5 yr old boy on the luggage rack and the 3 yr old twin girls occupy the Burley trailer. We are our own parade! We don't go far, but we have FUN!! And fast too, sometimes. Stoker and I have hit 48 mph on a steep descent. WEeee! The GTT is VERY stable at high speeds because of its lenghth.
OK... I also have a little red GTX for when I'm flying solo.

I got a Burley trailer at a garage sale so I don't kow what model it is. The hitch that it came with(a big ol ugly plastic framastatz) fits perfectly on both my Greensppeeds. (GTT & GTX, both early milenium models.)The rear triangle is consistent in degrees with standard DF cycles, only shorter.

I'm 62 and riding Sukispop's old 2001 GS GTO. I also own a 2003 WW 3.4. The GTO got most of my riding time last year, 4,884 out of 5,665 miles. My suggestion is to buy the best you can afford. You will not regret it.

In 64 years, I will envy you. Or rather, I hope to be you. ;)

I am 17 and have ridden two 24 hour competitions (not by myself) on a school-built custom trike, and I'm getting a trike myself from a 15yr old guy who builds them. The guy who said they ride like go-karts is right. They are very fun to ride, and also very stable obviously depending on which design. Our trike we raced was bombproof (until that guy flipped it), but hey your wifes not gonna be racing it around 130 degree turns.
