Mountain Biking - Soft Landings-Use wood chips

So last week I meant to post this but didn't get a chance. SO anyways I was on a ride and stumbled across this playground that had like a small one foot drop. It went into the playground and instead of gravel like most playgrounds have, this one had wood chips. Not loose but pretty compacted wood chips. So I did the drop into it, and BAM, so smooth. I'm telling you, if you guys want to take off some of the harshness of your bigger drops, put down a bag or two of wood chips. Really small wood chips though, not too big. There might be a teriffic downside here that I don't know about though...

Might be wrong, but youll probably find that landing on woodchips off something huge will compress the chippings and buck you off, i'd rather land on something hard that I know whats going to happen to it when i land personally...

I saw some big jumps on woodchips 2 weeks ago.They saved Jim DeChamp major hurt on a front flip gone wrong.

Wouldn't they stick into you and hurt a lot if you crashed?

Not if you have them soaking wet. I haave used them for about a year now on the drops I make. I used old downed willow trees that have been laying there for 10+ years and break them up. Trust me falling into them feels very nice compared to hardpacked.

Better than loose dirt? I don't like landing on loose dirt, especially on steep slopes because its easy to crash. I avoided a huge drop I could have hit because the landing was super loose (and steep), glad I did lol
