LONDON (Reuters) - An Alaskan chicken-hypnotist who cycles around the world with a traveling circus has ground to a halt after a charity clothes shop in Scotland sold her bicycle by mistake while she was in the fitting-room.
Emily Harris left the $1,800 bicycle leaning on a mannequin inside the British Heart Foundation shop in Edinburgh while she tried on a shirt. By the time she came out the bike had been sold for $15.
"I went into shock. I started shaking and I said 'what a lot of' with some expletives attached a few times," Harris told Reuters on Tuesday.
She said the shop staff apologized profusely but did not give her the proceeds of the impromptu sale.
"We're hoping the person who bought it will have the decency when he realizes the mistake to bring it back," said Jo Hudson, a spokeswoman for the British Heart Foundation.
"Someone's got an incredible bargain unbeknown to everyone including our unfortunate shop attendant."
Harris had built the bike herself around a German-made frame while working in a bicycle shop in New Orleans and had ridden it across much of the United States and Canada as well as Spain, France and Britain.
The 25-year-old from Palmer, Alaska, was touring Britain with a group of bike-riding circus artists who perform for children, financing their travels by busking in town centers and parks.
Harris performs as a fire-eater, puppet-master and concertina-player but her star act consists of hypnotizing chickens and making them play the piano, she said.
She was hoping the person who bought the bicycle would realize the mistake and return it to the shop, but failing that planned to request a working visa to make enough money to buy a new one.
"My plans are put on hold until I can get a bicycle. I can't do anything without one," she said.

How pathetic! I know it was an accident but they didn't even offer her the $15? How sad indeed.

What I see sad is the absolute ignorance of the store attendees, not to realize the bike was not there 10 to 30 minutes before they sold it.

What a shame they didn't wander out to the car park and sell a few customers' cars.
I find the callousness ot the management as deplorable as the ignorance of the clerk. And the frustrating part is: not a single word we say will get her bike back.
I would really like to see those hypnotized chickens play the piano. That would be something worth writing home about.

I know the Scots can be tight-fisted, but this is plain silly!!
I think she should hypnotise the management and get them to pay for it. I mean is there much difference between hypnotising a person whose sell an 1800 dollar bike for 15 bucks and that of the Iq of a chicken.

I was on my way to an employees, meeting, when I read that news, I was stun and I really felt sorry for the lady cyclist, but then a lesson here is learn even inside a store or a shopping mart, never let your sight on your bike, alway pay attention to people going or near your bike, I hope the management of the store offer her something in exchange for the bike...

Did I miss something?
Whatever happened to suing them? After all, isn't that some kind of bike-theft? They are at least responsible for damages!
I don't think it would ever occur to me to ask for the $15.

What you are misssing is that this is not the USA. In certian European countries there still is something called, "you are to blame, just as much as I am"
It sounds unfair though...

Now now. That's simply not true. All scots are generous and willing hosts.
In this case tho' they were stupid.

I think it's a case of stupidity on both sides really
- the girl left the bike unlocked, out of her sight (she even left the shop to do other shopping for a while) for 45 minutes without telling anyone in the shop. Who in their right mind would do that?
- The charity shop staff are obviously stupid for only charging £10...
Still the either the Heart Foundation or their insurers will end up paying, so the girl won't lose out despite her stupidity.

What did you expect out of an admitted chicken-hypnotist! You know, I still don't know what that (chicken-hynotest) means. Anyone?

Texans Chip in to Rescue Stranded Chicken-Hypnotist

LONDON (Reuters) - The plight of an Alaskan chicken-hypnotist whose circus tour was cut short in Edinburgh when a charity shop sold her bicycle by mistake has tweaked heartstrings as far afield as Austin, Texas.
Emily Harris left the 1,200-pound ($1,800) bicycle inside the shop this week and found it was missing after she came out of a fitting room. A shop assistant had sold it for 10 pounds.
Now a group of Austin engineers, who read about her loss on the Internet ( news - external web site), have raised $525 to help the 25-year-old from Palmer, Alaska, buy a new bicycle and resume her tour.
"There's been tons of layoffs here, Austin's been hit pretty hard with the technology sector, so we're just looking to do something to cheer ourselves up," software engineer Lawrence Hartley, who started the impromptu fundraising, told Reuters.
Hartley said he and his friends had identified with Harris after reading that her star act consisted of hypnotizing chickens and making them play the piano.
"We're all pretty much not quite normal. We identify more with a chicken-hypnotist than with the normal world," he said.
He and his friends have unusual hobbies of their own. One is building a submarine in his garage and several others practice "geo-caching," a form of treasure-hunting using satellite communications systems.
Harris was thrilled to hear of their efforts on her behalf and said $500 was enough for her to purchase a new bicycle and join her troupe for the rest of their tour of Britain.

This is what I've been saying: sometimes you get some really far-out deals at thrift shops.
