Mountain Biking - Computers installation

I'm planning to by a simple computer to know the distance that I travelling. I checked out the computers at Nashbar.com and is now confused. Does nashbar provides you enough materials to install the computer? because they also offered instal kits. I'm also confused as whether wired is better than wireless or not, because some wireless models are less expensive than the wired one as "you get what you pay for". Thanks

Install kits? No idea, 3 years back, when I was 10, I installed a wireless BC Sigma Sport computer on my bike all by myself, wasn't very hard.

I'd say wireless, less fuss with cables and the like.

EDIT: Damn, I meant to say I installed a wire...ful (:p) computer on my bike when I was 10.

They're simple to install. No other materials should be needed. Wireless vs. wired? Simply a matter of how much moolah you want to blow. Neither works better than the other, and the cheapest works as good as the most expensive. The higher ones may include a HRM or mood sensor though....

The wireless computers don't work with HID bike lights and can get interference from many things, even power lines. Some of them have to be very close to work. They use more batteries and are a little heavier.
The less expensive bike computers have less information for you. If you read the ad copy carefully most of them will tell you what you get.
Most computers come complete. What ones had install kits?

Some of the computers are switched to wireless simply by putting the computer into a wireless mounting system instead of a wired one.

Apparanly wireless computers can get interferance if your riding in a group [assuming other riders are wireless of course]

Personally I think wireless sucks, and is usesless on a mountain bike. My experiences with several brands have been very unsatisfactory and unreliable so far.

Computer installation b**** and whine :

That's the difference between a computer "operator" and a computer "programmer" Dude....

I had a cateye wireless for about 3 hours (took it back) I hated it, I can't belive they expect you to mount tha sensor & brain W/ zip ties & 3M tape :( total crap!!! my VETTA C20 10 years ago mounted with a plastic strap & a bolt much like todays front & rear releflectors mount. Just don't get one W/ zip ties make sure you get a real mount.

P.S. all the mounts you should need come W/ the computter.

I can't think of a computer I've ever sold that doesn't use zip ties, wired or wireless. They work, and are a lot cheaper to replace than a broken mount.

Yesterday I got a sigma 1600 and a wireless adaptor kit. I put the wireless on my mtn bike yesterday and it did great on a 8-9 mile ride. Tonight I put the wired kit on my commuter, also a mtn bike frame, just no suspension. So far the wireless wins for ease of install and clean function. The wireless rig has two extra batts though. I don't know about durability either. I don't like the wire down to the fork though, seems like it will wear out from vibration. Oh yea and no zip ties on either mount.
