Mountain Biking - Rear derailleur go bye bye :o

I just got back from carrying my bike home about 1 mile after just starting to go for a nice ride, I shifted into first to get up a hill, my spokes caught the derailleur and ripped it off, PWRDbyTRD tells me it's pretty typical to happen so I guess it's not a very big deal, I'm actually pretty surprised my lower end Shimano components have lasted as long as they have with the riding I do. Anyway I'll get it fixed this week and be back in business :)

heh..that's what i did with my old bike whilte doing a small drop. I thought my brakes had locked up, but it was actually the derailler jammed in the spokes.

It happens.

Make sure that your lower limit screw is set so that the read derailleur can't shift past the lowest cog and into the spokes. I always tweak mine so that I can *just* shift onto the lowest cog. Err on the side of caution. If you have it set right it shouldn't get caught in your spokes. (Emphisis on shouldn't - I cannot to say it will never happen!)

Also make sure that you get a new hanger or at least align the old one or you'll have a bunch of shifting problems

My bike is in the shop right now, the guy there looked at it and noticed my chain is a bit worse for wear and it had been bent from when the derailleur took a dump, so he's gonna install a new chain as well, also got a new seat, new pedals and the bottom bracket is being looked at, it didn't feel right. My bike will be like brand new when I get it back :) It should be done Friday, Monday at the latest.

When I was at the shop I looked at some nice Specialized and Trek bikes, I was drooling :) JK hehe

Hey you SRAM bashers ... see, it happens with Shimano as well. Are you going to tell this guy that he should ditch Shimano forever and go SRAM just because one mis-adjusted derailleur failed????

Just got off the phone with the shop, they had to order a derailleur for it, they only had high end ones in stock, ones that were more money then I wanted to spend, so it won't be done til Tuesday at the latest. So much for my planned Sunday ride. :(

They should've put one of the expensive ones on and only charged what the cheap ones cost. Thats what a good LBS would do anyway.
