Mountain Biking - FS or Hardtail

Im getting a new bike soon. I was planning on getting a hardtail at first, but my friends are convincing me to get a FS. I was wondering at an expense of around 700 dollars, what should i be getting?

Hardtail.

Definitley a hardtail, most Full Suspension bikes under 1000$ arnt very high quality.

and its best to learn on a hardtail. you can develop skill alot better, i found that you really need to learn you use you suspension and if you have on less thing to worry about you will be alot better. and like TL racer said you wont find a drcent FS bike for uner 1000$

It depends on what type riding your going to do with the bike. $700 will get you a nice hardtail. If your planning to buy a FS, you would need a few more dollars to buy a good one.

Yess thank you guys. I really want a hardtail too but i just couldnt make up my mind. I hate climbing with a heavy bike.

The trek 6500 is alright, but the Fusion is good. What kinda riding are you doing?

Hardtail for me, although if i start going bigger, then Ill probably test some FS rigs out and build my own.

My nickles worth of vote goes for FS. I'm an older rider and my new Trance allows me to hit the trails harder and faster than I ever could on the hardtail. I will gladly haul the extra 5 lbs.

For 700 bucks, you are not going to be getting much of a FS rig. I think a HT will be way more reliable at that price point. Keep it simple. I good HT can do almost anything a FS rig can do with the right rider, and is a lot more versatile.

But for 700$ the bikes (duallies) aren't worth the trouble :)

My GT idrive was just over $700, i think it was well worth it and am happy with it. But $700 is the absolute minimum for a FS. Of the ones i tested, the idrive was the only one that didn't bob to much.
I think there are only a few good FS's for that price, so if you go with one you better do your research. You'll be able to get a sweet hardtail for that price.
Also, if you don't want to do upgrades, the hardtail would be better since you'll be able to get a high end model, as opposed to the low end FS.

Hardtail! I love softtails, but for the price you will not get a good softail for under 1000. Just get a nice hardtail I would be looking more towards Kona too for a hardtail, but the flow for sure if not. I dont think the trek would be that great.

That's NOT a substitute for FS. Even if you put a "wuspension seatpost" on it will never measure up to a FS bike.

To the original poster: For $700 you don't need to mess with a FS bike. All the FS bikes in that catagory won't hold a candle to a hardtail in the same range. Good FS bikes START at $1000
