What would a good stem be for XC and all-around trails. Should I go long or short?

Theres no right answer... a stem isn't really determined by what riding you do but how the bike should fit you. Typically though, you want something longer for XC, shorter for aggressive riding. However then you have bikes like Fisher's with long top tubes + shorter stems... and then there are Specialized with a long top tube and a long stem, and Kona with a shorter top tube and a shorter stem....

like Seely said, size is determined by you. I see a lot of XC bikes with 110-120mm. Me personally, my frames top tube is long already and i have long legs which make up a lot of my height so i use a 100mm. As for a particular stem, it depends on budget. I got my WCS stem for 60 bucks, i love it

My stock is a short one...but I think I am going to buy a cheap midsized and try it out...and maybe go from there.

maybe your LBS has a cheap adjustable stem you can try out a bit until you figure what is best.
