General Cycling Discussion - How many bikes will you buy in your lifetime?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

seriously. you can extrapolate your future purchases based upon your past purchases, but really......how many more bicycles (frame sets) do you think you will buy in your lifetime?
moderate to heavy use would mean 30,000 to 50,000 or more miles per decade. one bicycle per decade? or if you are more than a roadie only, 2 or 3 bicycle frames per decade? or keep the same frame and keep building it up?

I can guarantee that I will not buy another bike in my lifetime. My personal stable is somewhere near 20; 9 of them are top of the line or near top of the line with the best equipment available. I may do an occassional up grade to a single component, but these bikes will not wear out before I do.

I bought my first bike (as an adult) in 1985, a Schwinn LeTour. Gave it to my son in 1992.
Bought a Raleigh R600 (all Shimano 105) in 1999. It's now my commuter.
Bought my Litespeed Tuscany (all Ultegra) in 2001.
If I ever get another job that pays a good salary (and my wife gives her blessing ;) ) I'd like to get a Trek 5500 or another quality carbon fiber bike.

That's all I can handle since I can only ride one at a time anyway. :D

My dream is to own a bike shop one day. Then I'll be able to have as many bikes as I want.

Yah, having a bike shop is pretty cool, but you still have to learn how to treat your customers nicely, be patient and not empty the customers' wallets.

I'll buy a Pinarello Prince with Campy Record 10, a Colnago C40, a Litespeed Tuscany or vortex, Principia, a Orbea, a Look, man I can name all the good bike and still drool over this bike,

Hmmm Principia, now there is a great Danish bike!!!!!
Anyway, I'll buy as many bikes as it takes in my lifetime of cycling.

at 31 i've bought 5 bikes as an adult and still have 4 of them...my original road bike was stolen from my parent's garage in summer 1991 :(

obviously any bike that gets stolen or crashed i will have to replace...

other than that, it's a shot in the dark, but i would guess i would probably buy something like 4-5 more bikes in my lifetime...

* i like to mountain bike where there are actually technology improvements worth buying (just bought my 1st full-suspension) and bike wear out faster b/c of all the abuse
* there are lots of specialty bikes i would like to own --- a tandem, a singlespeed, maybe a recumbent... maybe a folding travel bike
* my road bike isn't top of the line (Raleigh R700)

i'm not the kind of cyclist who always have to have the most expensive and latest-and-greatest (my full-suspension i bought in March was my first $2000 bike)... (a side note: i already put 1400km and 15,000 vertical meters on it off-road since March)

i could easily envision buying mabe 10 more bikes in my life if i continue to have some extra cash --- but seeing as i am probably again quiting my job to finish my PhD and then hoping to be a university professor, having lots of extra cash is not looking so likely...

Rode my new Heron Touring for the first time yesterday...can't get much better than that! :D Lugged, silver-brazed steel frame will out last me.

Also have a Raliegh Grand Sport and Jamis Coda.

I like to hang on to tried and trusted, so at 41 I have had 3 "adult " bikes.

i see no reason to buy anymore, but I might invest in a recumbent, and maybe a Raleigh Chopper, if funds allow.
