Aaron and I stretching at the picnic table at the juncture of our Saltzman fireroad climb and Leif Erricson. Two guys ride by, curteous nods all around. Eventually we start the flatish mozie along Leif, until we get to the Springville cutoff that climbs the last 500 feet to the top. Half way up the guys we saw earlier are there, one's got his bike flipped over, looking like he's fixing a flat. Grinding up the 15 degree climb, I give the customary "Ya got everything you need?" call, without paying much attention (they both had camelbaks, looked prepared enough for a flat.)
"Well, got a new chain?" the distressed one hollers. At this point I didn't really want to stop my momentum up the hill, but when a fellow rider's in need.... so I stop and discover his chain is apart, and both the end links are bent to chit. They've at least got a small pair of pliers, trying to bend it back into place. "Here, I've got a chain tool on my alien", I told them. I think at first they didn't quite comprehend what I was saying, and it looked as if they'd rather the crazy dude had just continued up the hill. But I pulled out the little chain tool I've only used a few times, and Aaron and I gladly helped them remove the bent link and snap the next one into place.
Very gratious now, amazed that we had just what they needed... helped them out of a bind that would have otherwise forced them to jog the 5 miles back down Leif to their car. "Where you going later, we'll buy you a beer!" Chris (Chain issue dude) asked. "Nice! How about Portland Brewing?" "Alright, see you there."
Aaron and I continued up to the watertower, bombed down the waterline trail, and ceremoneously followed Leif back to our cars. Back at Portland Brewing we had a great time with our new friends Chris and Eric, who kindly picked up the tab for the much deserved pitchers of IPA, Amber, and Lager.
