Commuting - need a good OBS for convering a MTB into a commutmobile

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

i need to find a good online bike store to convert my (cheapie) mountain bike into a decent commutmobile.
the mods i was thinking of are pretty easy and small

i want to change the handlebars to the bent style you see on the trek navigator or the trek t80

add some fenders

and a rack and rear panniers

change to slicks

and maybe in the future when i have more money change the 21 speed to a 9 speed (i dont need all those gears)

i dont mind the heavy frame although i wish it were a hard tail instead of all springy but mist of the time im not riding hard enuff to lose energy to the shocks just a simple commute 5 miles to and 5 miles back from work and maybe ride my bike up to the store to get beer or food.

come to think of it i may go buy a cheapie hardtail fram and see if by some mirical of god i may be able to successfully change all the working parts over.

i like the idea of a utilitarian bike weight means nothing to me because im young and i can just build strength to compensate a heavy frame besides i dont see what 5 lbs off the frame will mean when i weight close to 240 lbs myself (not fat im just 6 foot 6)

Search ebay and craigslist.org. I've seen a few bikes locally that were sub $100 and were already set to your specs. I'm even going to see one of the 1973 Schwinn touring bikes that was listed there this weekend.

Uh - a 21 speed is a 7 speed triple, a 9 spd triple will give you 27 speeds??

But why can't he convert to a 9 speed single? I know nothing about bicycle mechanics (yet), so I'm curious.

hell if i could id drop it to a 7 speed single i think a 9 speed single could be okay though but my comute is only 5 miles to work then another 5 miles back on any given day
