Mountain Biking - Mountain Bike Suggestions

I have rode bike all my life, on and off. Right now I have a Schwinn Automatic Comp Joey Garcia Signature Model. It's a Freestyle, and I'm looking to get a Mountain Bike. A couple of weeks ago I had went to Penn Cycle and looked around. I found a Schwinn (before they went to crap), and I can't belive I didn't buy it. It was a top-of-the-line Moab 3 (I think 3), and was special edition with disc brake's. It was discounted pretty good, but I didn't buy it. I am sooooo stupid. Very nice bike too. Agh!

Ok, so I was at the same bike store last night - looking around. Well, I didn't look close enough just browsed through.

So now, I turn to you to recommend me something. I do not want to spend more than $700, no more than $800 (that's pushing it). I'd like to have quality Shimano components, RapidFire Shifters, and nice shocks (adjustable rebound and the other thing). I also would like to do a lot of just "riding". My dad has a cruiser, and I noticed with the not as wide tires it went a little bit faster. I don't plan on doing hardcore trails at first, but I'm sure I could find some different tires.

If you can find another Moab from before they were bought out I would seriously consider it. I have been very happy with mine. I think mine is a 2001. Its a Moab 3 with disc brakes tabs, although without disc brakes. I think your thinking of a Moab1, or a Moab1 disc. If you can't find another SchwinnMoab, or don't want to deal with the hassle of finding a derrailleur hanger if you bend it, I would look at Giants(Rainier), and maybe a raleigh or a Gary Fisher. I would be careful about basing your bike purchase on the optoins your fork provides when shopping in this price range. While most forks will have some adjustments, it sounds that for your kind of riding right now doesn't require a lot of them. Either way, be wary of other components on the bike if you find a bike in this price range with a really nice fork. Remember that you can always upgrade later when you feel the need for the extra adjustments. Good luck in your search!

well all i can say is for 700-800 bucks your **** out of luck, id get a gary fisher marlin, i had the same problem as you do and got one and love mine

How are Trek these days? They used to be good back in like 95-96 but how about now?

Go to as many LBS as you can. Ride as many as you are able in that price range, and decide for yourse;f, after all it is you who will ride it.

I am looking at the Trek 7700 - but I don't think it'll be strong enough. It's a Hybrid; which is more what I want.
