Training & Nutrition - Century Training Schedule

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Bicycling magazine used to have a 10-12 week century program that gave you a weekly schedule to follow.
I can't find the copy that I had ...does anyone have one? This old man is going to do the HOTTER THAN HELL HUNDRED again and needs to get a program going.

Bicycling Magazine also had another century schedule on their old site. I emailed them about those training technique pages and the person who replied said they should be back online in a couple of weeks.

I am planning my first century at the HHH too!
Last year I did my first ride there, 25 miles. I've come a long way.
So far this year I've done 2-100K and 78 miles. I'm getting there.

Maybe we should start a HHH thread or forum, so that we can all meet up in Wichita Falls, Texas the last week end in august.
It would be a curious sight to see all the different lifeforms that we represent.

roadie - out of curiosity where do you rate your current condition. I would also like to do a century, but I haven't ridden with any gusto for any distance in a long while. Also how was the tour de Paris (Paris, TX that is)?

My condition is great for an old man, whos had a heart attack and asthma and weighs #252.
I'm averaged 14.2mph at the Tour De Paris. I haven't rode anyhing over 50miles this year. But I am starting a long ride +10%every week between now and HHH. I'm riding in the heat 95F so I think that by the last of August I'll be there for a slow century.
The Tour de Paris was very good. Well supported, good turnout. Tourist, you should have came. I know if you work at it just a little you can do atleast the 50 at HHH.

Well, based on that info. I'd agree I should be able to do the 50 at HHH. 14.2 is a good avg for any body in it for fun. I haven't had a heart attack, but I ain't the smallest critter on the planet either. Maybe I'll crank up the training and try for the 50. You've been an inspiration.

I'll buy you a beer after the ride!

Deal. Free beer is my favorite kind!!
Hey 1oldroadie,
You can't buy the beer, I was gonna do that.
Of course after HHH one beer ought to be more than
enough to do me in.

A recent "Mountain Bike" article stated beer is a good post-ride beverage.

Like you really need an article to tell you beer's good for you. Of course it is!! ;)
..post-ride, post-work, post-previous beer, etc.

It doesn't take exceptional fitness to complete a century, just a block of time. Ride 3 or 4 hours in the morning. Take a long leisurely lunch, nap, relax, what have you. Ride 2 or 3 hours in the afternoon. Enjoy a good dinner, kick back, enjoy some good conversation. Ride another couple hours in the evening. Voila! A leisurely placed century completed.
A magazine that tells you that completing a century is takes a lot of preparation is trying to sell you, well, magazines.

I don't know, I think I was interested in doing a little better than a 12 hour century.
