I'm thinking of campaigning a single speed bike this cross season.
The simplicity and reliability really appeals to me, but I'm worried about being competitive on such a machine. I'll be riding Men's Cs and placed mid-field in most races last season.
Who here a) actually races and b) has done it on an SS?

Talk to the race organizers and see if you can get them to put on a singlespeed only category. I'm from portland and there is a huge ss cat. here. As to singlespeed in a geared cat, you will almost definately drop some placings due to spinning/mashing. However, its much more fun (i think so anyway) than geared, so if winning isn't an issue, by all means go singlespeed. an easier gear is better than a bigger one.

No Single Speed Catagories here in New England; however numerous people participate in the classes with Single Speeds.
yep, raced a couple of years in B races on a SS. It's fine, great fun too. Didn't find that I did much better or worse than on gears.
