I just got an early 80's schwinn japan made. Seems like all the components are schwinn approved, shimano freewheel...been picking it apart and admiring, and formulating a battle plan to get it on the road. It definitely needs a new BB. It is rough, thankfully the outer frame shows no corrosion, but inside the bb definitely is gunked.
anyway-
Anyone know what kind of threads this bike will have on the BB? I have been thinking that it is a sugino- also japanese? I don't have the bb tool right now, but I have a suspicion which tool it is, cost me a couple of 6 packs to borrow one from the LBS to do another BB.
seen some sugino tools on ebay which look like they would fit.
another one:
BB measurements. having a hard time figuring out what those mean? are they spindle lengths, bottom bracket dimensions, cupsizes, what?
help out a rookie

The BB threading will be British (a common standard). Take your old spindle out & match it up with what your LBS has...

If I get the right threading, can I just measure the spindle, and get something off ebay or the net?
Is a sealed BB as good as it seems?
or is cup and cone style good enough? I plan on riding 4 seasons to work in Colorado, and I don't live in sunny denver or boulder.
I want something sturdy, I weigh 250.
thanks for the o so quick info
this is great! they can be condescending at the LBS with repair questions- as if they don't have enough work!

Look here under old-style cup-and-cone BBs. Click on the link at the top of this page for BB sizing info.

Once you get it apart and cleaned up, you may find that the bearing surfaces are ok, and all you need to do is put in new bearing balls and fresh grease. The bearings in the bottom bracket are pretty good sized and will stand up to a lot, as opposed to the front wheel cones which I always find to be pitted and in need of replacing.
