General Cycling Discussion - Hints on bike fit

I saw this in the 1970 book The Complete Book of Bicycling by Eugene A. Sloan.
Attached is a scan of the page on bike fit.
This ageless concept still works in these modern times.
Measure the distance from your crotch to your inside heal. Multiply by 1.09. This should be the distance from the top of the saddle to the top of the down-position pedal.

Sloane was my favorite author when I was first learning about bikes. I think I have maybe 4 editions of that book. He is an out spoken, opinionated grouch, but the best tutor I ever had. He showed me how to build my first wheel, and over haul my first 3 speed.
For people interested in older bikes, they can't do much better than Sloan. Every once in awhile his early books show up in used bookstores at a reasonable price.

I'll just add the observation that, if one uses a crank length of 170mm, this "1.09" number yields approximately the same result as the other magic bike-fit number: inseam X .883 = center of cranks to top of seat.
My inseam: 81 cm
X 1.09 = 88.3 cm - 170mm = 71.3
X .883 = 71.5
Your mileage may vary.
