Alt Bike Culture - Mutant BMX's How Do You Make One?

I was in NYC over the weekend and saw a slew of mutant BMX bikes. You know where they have those posts to hold up the seat so you can sit down. Where do you get those posts that hold up the seat?

I know there is a BMX forum but you guys are more informative!

Looks like a sissy bar to me (holding up the seat), try looking for one at a place that sells low-rider bike, or chopper bike parts.

It's Shiznaz's bike, I believe. Fire him a pm. Looks like a sissybar to me too... I'm not sure if electrical conduit would work...

Don't use that bike to ride through boys town.

I dunno what you mean. Boys Town is one of the best areas of the city. I wouldn't ride it through Pilsen or Wicker Park because someone would bite my style.

So...where can I get a sissy bar?

personally, I would just make my own. any pipe/metal would work. those sissy bars are just made of crap steel usually. nothing special.

I was not talking about crime or being hassled.I was talking about the riding position ,plus all your weight will be on your wrists.

Half inch rigid copper water pipe, a hammer and a drill. The bicycle sissy bars were so thin I could bend them by hand. Chopper style motorbikes also have sissy bars and would probably be more substantial.
I believe Shiznaz said the seatpost was from an exercise bicycle.

That I did. Had to shim it slightly though, but its not really too much of an issue because I have the sissy bar there.

I haven't ridden it in a while though because I had to take the cranks off for use on a more practical bicycle. Once I get it back in working order I am going to do some adjusting on the fit. Right now I'm way behind the BB and I can feel it grinding my knees when I try to lock up the back wheel. I'm thinking I'll probably lower the seat a little (maybe even enough to not need the sissy bar), and put on some big tall bmx bars. As it is right now it is fun super fun to ride, but highly impractical and probably somewhat dangerous (the skidding thing). Once the position is a little more neutral I'll be able to start attempting tricks and other fun stuff!

Then again, since its fixed wheel it might turn into even more of a beast to ride because I'll need to be standing up the whole time, or kneeing myself in the jaw :O

Anyways, it will be several months before I even see that bike again so I can let the ideas simmer.
