Hey -

I was wondering: If I'm rocking Keirin grips for racing, do I still need to have plugs in my bars, or is it okay as is? I know that plugs are part of the rules, but it would seem as though the grips can fill that role.
Anybody know?

Thanks.
J

I think they suffice, at least at my local Velodrome (SJ).

See people with Keirin grips race there all the time. Even see people with Champagne corks stuck in their bar ends. So, AFAIK, as long as the bar end is covered or filled, you should be fine.

Yes If you are racing.. If not you will regret it. I will show you what happens when you don't. If you racing at Kissena Good Luck this weekend.

Bar plugs- for sure.
Toss the cheap plastic ones and go straight to the steel ones with the bendable tines. Pop 'em into the ends of your bars (make sure they're snug) and slip your keirin grips over them. The steel plugs are narrower than the plastic ones and this method works well.
Cork works well too. But make sure it's snug.
The point is- If you go down and get that bar in your gut- are you going to walk away bruised or are you going to be carried away bored and needing further medical attention? (not that I've ever seen anyone get gored by their bars...)
As far as what the officials will call- they (holes in bar's ends) just need to be covered.

Less than a week until opening night in Northbrook!
