I want to do this on the cheap so I'm wondering if these wheels (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=58089&item=7155809946&rd=1) would be a decent choice. I pretty much ride easy trails and pavement for the most part. I want to go cheap because I need a wheelset, brakes/levers, and I plan to upgrade my fork too.
TIA for your help.
Rip off. After all is said and done with the bidding you'll end up paying more than these http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/12012-365_SHIXS3-3-Parts-75-Wheelsets/Shimano-XT-Disc-Wheelset-w_-Sun-Rhyno-Lite-Rims.htm
for a inferior wheelset.
Also if you're riding the easy stuff chances are you really don't need discs in the first place.

Those eBay wheels would be $100 shipped. I stick to xc riding, but there are some technical spots on the main trail I'veridden on. I expect that I can deal with a "not so burly" wheelset, but I don't want crap either. Would the $20 + shipping extra for the Pricepoint wheels really benfit me that much over these eBay ones?
As far as going disc over V-brakes. I figure that I might as well go the distance now rather than buy better Vs and make the disc upgrade later on anyway.

The wheelset that you showed me isn't worth $100 total. The wheelset that I showed you is what I currently use and they're MILES ahead on quality

Its true...the wheels you show on ebay are bottom of the barrel. Probably no name crap on there and the fact that they can offer it with velociraptor tires for the same price scares me even more. Sun Rhyno lites are a reputable rim, as are the XT hubs.
I'll be the third to tell you to get the rhyno lites with the xt hubs. I ride mainly xc but like to know I can do what I want on the trails and not be concerned that my rim can't handle it. And if you don't race what problem is there with a little extra weight for security? I figure it just makes you a stronger rider.

I just happened to notice that you live in the Chicago suburbs. Where do you ride? And when you get that new wheelset make sure you bring them by your LBS to have them checked out before you ride on them. Doubt they would charge you much, mine was nice enough to do it for free. Hopefully they won't hassle you asking why you didn't get the wheels from them. Hope you enjoy them
My Rhyno Lite wheelset with LX hubs will be here tomorrow via UPS. After much research and asking oddly about those same eBay rims on these forums I was lead to PricePoint as well. Good reviews and a stellar price. Good luck, and barring any trouble I'll be back to riding when my new wheelset tomorrow night. Bending my stock rear rim has had me decommisioned for almost two weeks, I'm getting antsy..

Actually, I'll run by the LBS and see if they'll cut me a deal on a fork, brakes, and wheels before I buy online. I'd like to give them my business before I go elsewhere, but I'm not tied to them if the savings would be significant. I'll certainly run my bike by them after I swap components for a check-up.
As far as my riding locations go... I ride 80% of my time on paved trails in Schaumburg while hauling a Burley trailer with my son inside. I've ridden at Palos once and and will go back many times :D I plan to hit Deer Grove in June. I've also ridden the Prarie Path with some friends on a leisurely ride.

While I find that admirable I doubt they can touch the price of the wheels I showed you.

Those aren't disc hubs. The flanges are too small.
THESE are the ones you want Be sure it says DISC

A question about disk compatable wheels, cant you just change the inner of the wheel to support disks, like replace some shaft or something? It seems a bit stupid that they desgiend it so the WHOLE wheel had to be replaced....theres probalby a reason though?
Elisdad

My understanding is that you'd have to replace the hub. That'd mean taking out the spokes and swapping hubs. Then relace the spokes to your rims. In my case, on the stock wheels that came with my Hardrock, it's not worth it. It might be worth it for others though, if they have really nice rims already.

You have to replace the entire hub. Also some rims aren't designed to handle the forces that a disc brake will produce.

I getcha. I was talking about the hub of the wheel, not shaft. How much would a new hub cost? Is it worth it?

Well It depends on where you shop.and what you're working with. Disc Hubs can cost as little as $30 and as much as a few hundred. Then you have to get new spokes and possibly a new rim PLUS wheelbuilding charges. If you can get something like a Rhynolite XT disc setup prebuilt for $120 why spend twice that piece it together? Hand built wheels are a nice thing, but machine built wheels can be nearly as good with proper maintenance. (ie truing and tension check)

I to am hoping to get some discs. So i have to get new wheels. I have a GT Idrive full suspension.
I want to get a rim that is strong enough for roughish singletrack, and maybe some drops, i doubt i'd do more than 5 feet, but i'd like 5ft to be an option.
I also don't want them to weigh anymore than my stockers. Which are Syncros Big Box with shimano RM40... hubs. I couldn't find any weight ratings on my wheels.
Do you think thats doable?
I was looking at Sun 0degree lites, mavic 717 (or the older 317), Sun singletrack, and rhyno lites.
Can any of those handle that riding? Oh i'm 140 lbs.

I have Sun 0 deg lites, im not sure i would trust them for a 5 foot drop. Out of those i would go singletrack.

Would you or anyone know where the hell i can find the wieght of the Syncro Big Box rims i have?
Both the single track and the rhyno lites with a shimano hub are pretty heavy, around 2300-2450g.
Any other suggestions i didn't mention on rims?

well at your weight you may be able to get away with something a bit lighter, keep in mind though that no wheel will be very light for:
drops
anything under 300
and sort of disc, although you can get some really lightweight disc wheels, but it is very costly.
Try http://www.cambriabike.com/shopexd.asp?id=11074
im just not sure about those 5 foot drops with that rim, if you weighed anymore i would not use them

Yeah, i kinda doubt i'll be going to 5ft so idk.
I dont even know if my Syncros can handle 5ft.
I was hoping to keep it under $350, it seems most wheelsets go from around 200 and then jump to 500+, not many in the middle.
Thanks for the help!

under 350 is easy, look at those rims i showed you, get some 2.0/1.8/2.0mm spokes and get Onyx hubs. Bens bikes a while ago was offering the front+rear for the onyx hub at a fantastic price of $120. Email them and see if its still up, or check their store

Thanks DB for the WW site, though it didn't have my syncros there, its a cool site.
I just realized, those sun 0d rims dont say disc compatible....i know some are both, but i've seen no mention of discs on them, so i'm guessing its not recommended.

You can put disc brakes on most rims, its fine. Im running the 0 degree lites right now, they are a strong product but im not using discs. I have seen on ebay wheelsets with 0 degree lites laced to whatever disc hub before. The thing is with them is that they have machined rim brake surfaces so you may not like the look. Personally i like the silver shiny, but if you dont look at the other link i sent or if you can find the Sun SUB IV rim. THis is pretty much the same thing except no machined surface. I laced a set for a guy with those onyx hubs frm Bens bike using the SUB IV rims and as far as i know, he has had no problems

That is a really good hub. Ask Bens using the ask a seller feature if they still have the onyx rear, they will sell it to you for 100 dollars so you get some high end stuff for 126.95

My LBS suggested the new Mavic Crossland (not crossmax or link). They are tubeless and tube compatable. They are also rim and disc compatible. They have um for $250 which is the same as i find everywhere online.
I think i would go with those, but they are 24 spoke...that kinda worries me. Mine current ones are 32.
I just broke two spokes today on my ride. Im quite pissed. I went to the LBS looked around at wheels and whatnot, then went riding, got maybe 15 min of riding in and i was going up a steep up hill...i have no idea what happened. I don't know if a stick got caught or what. Of course i was in the midpoint of the trail...so i rode it as slow as i could bare (frustrating as all hell) and noticed the wheel is very untrue after a few minutes.
Idk if i should take that as a sign of 'get yourself some new rims b*tch' or what.
I went to speedgoat.com and i can get the Sun singletrack w/shimano xt hubs
for $290 plus shipping.
I rethought that 5ft drop, i actually took a tape measurer and looked at something that would be a 5ft drop...yeah that would snap my bike i think. I think i'll drop my limit to 4 foot at most. At my weight i think i could probably trust the Crossland or 0degree, but that 24 spokes still urkes me.
Yes, yes....you are talking to a very indecisive person. To tell the truth i don't know how i get anything done. I usually just go 'screw it' and make the wrong choice. lol

Forgot to get to my the question of is spoke # a big difference, or is the actual rim more important?
phantomcow2
05-21-05, 06:44 PM
24 spokes?? I would avoid that, fewer spokes cause more PITA's than they do advantages. Go 0 degree lite or something similar, look at Velocity rims also. Velocity makes some good mid weight rims. The Velocity mountain goat are a nice compromise, they weigh something like 500 grams which i would feel much more confident dropping with as opposed to a 400gram rim

Forgot to get to my the question of is spoke # a big difference, or is the actual rim more important?
Both are important, but you need many spokes to deal with the forces disc brakes exert. Its written in several places, you should always use at least 32spokes for any disc wheel. The rim is also important, when you have fewer spokes you need heavier rims to keep the strengh of the wheel

:D
While still being indecisive...i took another look at that link to CBO you posted. I looked around at their site, and noticed:
$150 Sun Singletrack/Shimano XT 756 disk hub
That is ****ing insane.
So i done bought them. They are a bit heavier than i wanted, but only by 200-300 grams. I can easily make up for that with the right tires. And i payed about half what i was expecting to pay. I could almost wet myself.
D'oh...i just realized i should have seen their prices on some avid brakes. Oh well.
Thank you a heap for the help. I am now smarter from our conversations....psh how many of my teachers can say that :p

maybe he stole them. But others were selling the same hub not long ago on there, I ran that hub for at least 1k and i loved it. Also, it isnt like it screams "DT SWISS HUGI PRESTIGIOUS HUB", it says Hayes and when people look at Hayes for hubs they say.... "wtf?". So its kind of generic, i suspect thats why. ALso Bens buys a lot of everything and sells it off because they get better prices as they buy many things, regardless i would not let that hub slip and DT has it in their database for the spokcalc.

Got my new wheelset and brakes today.
I cant if the wheel is 3x laced or 2x...how do i tell. I mean i suppose they would know better to put 2x on a disc only rim, but i thought i'd be able to tell the difference. Any pics or ways of figuring it out would help alot!
