I've been given conflicting information by two area Trek dealers so I hoped some one on the list might have some advice.

The Trek Pilot 5 has eyelets at the rear hub. One Trek dealer said he could mount a rear rack on the bike with no problem. The other Trek dealer said you cannot mount a rack to any carbon frame and he didn't know why the eyelets are there. He said he thought putting a rack on it would void the warranty.

The Trek Pilot 5 is all carbon, a Trek Pilot 2 (I believe) is combination carbon and aluminum.

Who's right?

I'm trying to choose between the Pilot and a Specialized Sequoia. IlLike the Pilot, but not if I can't have a sturdy rear rack (not a seat-post variety).

Thanks for the help.

Are there any threaded eyelets on the chainstays?
You can fit a 3-point rack to the fender eyelets and the brake bolt.
I dont see how this will damage the carbon, the weight is taken on metal dropouts but drop a line to Trek and tell us what they recomend.
This kind of bike will not respond well if heavily loaded but should esily cope with a hostel touring load. The best rack for lightweight bikes is the Tubus Fly

I've got a Pilot 2.1. The frame is aluminum and the forks are carbon. It does have the eylets for a rack. You could buy a Pilot 2.1 and a Touring 520 for the price of the
Pilot 5.

I have a rack on a carbon fiber tandem. No problem.

Reviving this very old thread to see if anyone else can volunteer some information.

I just got a Specialized Sequoia Elite (aluminum frame, carbon fork and seatstays) and I would like to equip it with a rear rack. Is this a bad idea? I don't carry heavy loads (probably 25 lbs. max).
