Well, I figure the race will end on the 1st or 2nd day. Multiple alleycats might escape police attention, but Boston-NY w/ supporting vehicles, riding in a pack??? A bit too ambitious. That said, I hope they get away with it.

It's not a guarantee that this is going to happen. About a year ago the Phoenix did an "expose" about basement music venues(as in the basement of someones house) and everyone said it was the end of an era. A year later there are still a few in existence.

That being said, did they have to say "Thursday-night races, held on an outdoor track at an undisclosed Boston college". It almost seems that the Phoenix is willing to ruin a good thing for a desperate grab at "street cred". Weak.

just do it on a different night. or we could call in and report ourselves at a track on the other side of town...and who's the snitch? and boycott the phoenix!

I was there the night the Phoenix was scouting the track races out. The person scouting (as opposed to the reporter) told everyone that they were going to do a front page story, so it's not a real surprise.

Wow, what a terrible article. Factually inaccurate and its breathless, "they're so daaangerous," tone is stupid.

I was hoping for better. You can tell a good story about alleycats and underground racing without hyperventilating.

Oh, and it's legal to ride on Route 1.

The way I look at it... you don't really want the press knowing all the ins and outs anyway. article is fine for what it is. This **** is really starting to blow up.

Except for Friendly's, where it is called a Fribble.
I'll one up you on that Fribble White Lobster, I'm leaving my house right now for a ride to the Esplanade. Hopefully, I can get a good pic for ya.

I used to teach sailing at Community Boating on the Esplanade. Cool place to spend the summer, except for the daily bike commute to Melrose each day that damn near got me smooshed. Definitely needed a fribble after that mess. I don't know if there's a good way to get from downtown to the northern burbs. I certainly hadn't found it.

I ride from Brighton to Peabody pretty regularly to visit the 'rents. I think its a pretty nice ride. I get to Sullivan Square either through Harvard from Brighton or through Charlestown when coming from downtown, take 99 out of Sullivan over the Malden Bridge, take 99 up to the Rte 16 rotary, where I get one Main St in Everett. That'll take you through Everett, Malden and Melrose up into Wakefield. The farther north you go, the nicer it gets as far as cycling conditions go.

So I need to get to riding again but I hate to leave my pup home alone. Anyone ever get their dog to stay in a basket and like it? Any good hints for training the little guy?

That's exactly how I used to go. I can't tell you how many times I've almost gotten killed in that rotary! I'd just turn my walkman up (Bad Brains usually, for some reason) and go for it.

This was 15 years ago. Is the stinky leather tannery still there, just on the Boston side of the drawbridge?

jacobs

It's still there, but it's out of commision I believe. No more stink. Unless I'm thinkingof a different building, which is possible. Looks like a tannery though (and I should know! I am from Peabody..)

Weird, I never find those rotarys to be very problematic. The Rte 16 one especially is real small. Maybe things have changed for the better? I have much more of a problem in some of the ones in JP and Cambridge.

As someone who's spent years and years riding a motorcycle in the past (had no license for a car) I'm offended by the statement that "maybe with a motorcycle" they could be caught. Fat chance! A bicycle is so much more nimble, and an in-shape rider can move really quick - maybe Bob Hannah on a moto-x bike could catch 'em, but I'd not consider it a certainty.....

I've seen a guy along the river (Dr PDW path) a couple times with his dog in a rear pannier. The dog seemed to be having fun checking stuff out.
