The nubs on my tires have been getting low and I think it is effecting my traction. Is there any guide to use when thinking about getting new tires?

I think there is some fallacy in KonaRider24's logic-
if there's dirt on em', that might mean you are riding in slightly too muddy conditions. Several excellent dry trail tires are the worst ever in mud. Same vice-versa. But the one genarilization that can be trusted is this: if the tread is more than 65% worn down (from its original height), replace them.

I run them until a certain percentage of rubber is left.

When there is a hole in the tire...replace it. 65% is a lot of the tread left. Well at least for my tires it is.

I have a hole in my tire from a nail, should it be replaced? The tread is still pretty decent.
