is there any reason this would be a bad thing to do?

I know this is only a question of five dollars but everyone one of my rims on all my bikes are drilled for presta except one so I always have a lot of presta tubes laying around

You can get some little adapters that fit over the presta valve stem and make it fit just right in a schrader rim hole. They cost about $2 for a pair. I'd get them if I were you, because the tube can bulge out a little and cause a flat if you don't use them.

not a problem. the only thing you would care about is the stem flopping around. you have a few options
1. you can get a steel insert that'll take up the extra space (I don't recomment this, i just had one oxidize to the tube stem making the tube impossble to remove)
2. you can get a rubber grommet that does the same thing.

3. use a presta valve nut on the inside as well as the outside of the rim (my method of choice for the past 6 months)
4. just use the presta tube and don't worry about it.

I also like the rubber version, cause I think it looks better. Glad to hear it's not going to freeze in place either :)

I like those two options

I actually know of four options:

1. The rubber grommet. I don't like 'em.

2. Aluminum sleeves. They don't seize. They're easy to use. They're a little unsightly.

3. A presta nut with a little collar on it that fills the schraeder hole. This is the nicest looking option and works like a charm, but those wee nuts are hard to come by.

4. Just put the presta tube in the schraeder rim and let it go at that. Problems are minimal to nonexistent.

NB: It's late. I'm tired. I know I spelled schraeder wrong. Sue me. I may post links to the various kinds of adaptors tomorrow, if I can be bothered.

I rode a presta tube (with no other mods) in a schraeder rim on my crappy street-beater mtb for a year with no problems. Go for it.
