Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Powdercoat your frame/fork for CHEAP in Boston!!!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hey folks,
I've been searching for a cheap, but professional, powdercoater in the Boston area for my fixie frame/fork, and I finally found the place. They have a $200 minimun, BUT, the guy told me to just bring in 2 bikes and he'd do them both for $200, TOTAL! They have every color AND sandblast the factory/existing paint and pretreat the frame prior to powdercoating--all included in that price! The turnaround time is only 3-5 business days, and this place is just outside of Boston. Soooo, I'm looking for someone who wants their bike powdercoated too. $100 each, for the whole process, start to finish. This price is unheard of. I called just about every place in the phone book around here, and most quoted well over $100 for the powdercoating alone, and insisted the bike be dropped off completely clean/stripped of paint. Sandblasters quoted me anywhere from $25 to $125 to strip the frame! Don't miss this opportunity. Coat that Fixie in bulletproof powder! email me.

Isn't there a place in attleboro that'll do it for $40 or so?

do I also have to wait at a public phone for a call to directions to an undisclosed location and hand off my frame and $$$ to someone in an unmarked van?
not that I came across, but I'll look into it. Is that including sandblasting? I have yet to find a single other place that conveniently sandblastis and powdercoats.

Funny that you mention this. The place you are talking about is called SD Powdercoating. I emailed Steve two days ago about getting some work done and he has yet to get back to me. In December he quoted $40 for the powdercoat and $30 for the sandblast(optional). If he is still in business I will be sending him a frame sometime next week. I will let you all know how it works out.

yes, absolutely. Those are the conditionse exactly, though rather than a pay phone, you'll find a cell phone under the bench near...
Just kidding. I really didn't mean to sound secretive. The place is Applied Plastics in Norwood.

If anyone has some good contacts in Chicago for powdercoating and sandblasting please let me know.
That's even better than my $100 find (Applied Plastics, Norwood). $40 + $30 =...a damn sweet deal!

i just got an e-mail from a place off of grand ave. about 3500W or so. they said they'll powdercoat for $80, and blasting is $40. A little more expensive, but it seems to be a pretty nice shop so you don't have to worry too much about them painting your threads and whatnot. let me know if you want the info, and i'll send it your way.

I got my conversion frame and fork done for $50 about 15 minutes outside of Pittsburgh. SingleSpeeDemon's was $80 after the guy ordered the powder. Both of them looked great, too. PM me or SingleSpeeDemon if you're in the area and you want the info.

Back to the topic. I called S+D and left a message, but haven't heard back from them.
Extreme Powdercoating in Merrimack NH has a great reputation and estimated $125-150 including stripping, decreasing and finishing.
I called Goodhues Custom Powdercoating in Derry, NH. Derry is just over the MA border off Rt 93. They said it would probably be $75-90, depending on color and condition, but would not be over $100. As they're closer than Merrimack, Attleboro, or Wareham that's where I plan to go.
Probably overkill for an old Trek 720 frame but it's a city bike and I want to see how it looks and holds up.

Wareham is a bit of a drive from Beantown so I didn't call them.

This thread could not come at a better time, i am building a lemond fixie and would love to have it powdersoated.
So anyone with any feedback from SDpowdercoating here?

How has your finish held up to the winter road salt and sand that a Boston commuter bike faces? And the freeze/thaw cycles that can occur through three seasons here?

Ah, well then at least you understand that people in Boston aren't profligate - just trying to balance being penny wise and pound foolish given the local conditions.
I painted my snow thrower with spray-on engine enamel. I wish I'd called the powdercoating outfits first as it took a ton of time to neutralize the rust, remove the old finish, and put on three coats plus a clear coat. And it was chipped again the first time I used it.
this thread needs some pictures. (besides powdered pastries, lol)
been thinking about powdercoats for some of my nicer old bikes that have been rattlecanned.

The old Trek 720 frame I bought is at Goodhue's now. It should be done in a week or so. I'm having it PC a close match to the original red color. The decals will be wiped out but it's just as well, since junkies may not be able to differentiate between a cool Trek and a junkie, pieced-together one. The bottom bracket was removed before I dropped it off.

Picked the frame, fork and handlebars up today. The business is in a large, basically triple garage attached to their home. The entire frame wask packaged in PVC foam. It was finished in red (very similar to original) with a clearcoat, after media blasting.
They did a really, really nice job. I'll get some better pictures outdoors tomorrow. The finish looks good, is extremely uniform, but doesn't have a lot of buildup - you can easily read the serial number stamping. All the threads and bearing surfaces were masked off nicely.
The total cost was $100 for media blasting and finishing of the frame, fork and handlebars. They promised it in ten days but it was ready in a week. Based on the results I definately recommend them.
One note - they're not great about answering email but always call back within a few hours if you leave a phone message.

Nice work. That was from Goodhues, right? How much prep did you have to do other than stripping the components?
///edit///
In response to jinxremoving's post, I contacted Diana at S&D and this is what she had to say:
Hi Michael, To strip and coat your frame would be $130.00. There is an additional $25.00 charge for clear coat or if the color you chose requires and under coat. Turnaround time is about 3 weeks right now.You can either ship your frame or drop it off to us,which ever you prefer.
When I brought up the post I read about an eighty dollar job they did, she replied thusly:
Michael, We've never quoted anyone that price for stripping and coating. Before the 1st of the year we charged $35.00 to strip and $75.00 to coat.We have now gone up $10.00 on each.If we quoted that it would have been a few years ago but I don't recall doing that.
Let the newbie hazing begin.

None! They do some pretty intense motorcycle parts (along with uindustrial stuff) so the did a much better job keeping the threads clear and cleaning up corrosion on the internal tube surfaces than I expected.
Most of the shops in the area seem to do a good job, but are closer to $125 than $100. Also if you wanted some special color combo it might be more - I just went with solid red so I didn't get into pricing for two tones or anything special.

Wow. If I hadn't seen your pics I'd say it was too good to be true. Since I have, I guess I'll be making a run to Derry soon. Thanks for the info, Garandman.
Lots of people from bustedspoke.com (New England DH/FR mtn bike forum) get their frames done at S&D. I have yet to hear anything but glowing reviews. My Sinister Ridge was powdercoated bassboat sparkle blood red by them and it looks mint. Unfortunately it gets thrown into the rocks on occasion when I eat it but the paint holds up as good as any.

No dount S&D can do a good job - they have some righteous custom bikes on their website. But they did not return either of my phone calls in over a week.

Here's an update on S&D. They called me back and left me a message today - that's 4-5 weeks since I left the message.
They quoted $130 in the message.
