I have an old Diamond Back Ascent and I want to upgrade the wheelset. It has a Shimano 7 speed cassette I want to just get that and put it on the new wheel/hub. Will anything work (Shimano wise)or do I need a specific setup? I want to keep things inexpensive as I am looking at buying a road bike, (oops can you say r$@& bike on the MTB forum?). Thanks

Just make sure that you get a wheelset with a 7 speed hub. The 8/9 speed hubs are a different size.

I still have my '93 DB Ascent EX !
It's black with red & white tiger stripe's. Sounds kinda dumb maybe, but actually it's 99% black with some neat stripe's....
That's the bike that got me hooked on the sport, Dude.

I used to have one an Ascent EX as well, I loved that bike. I gave it to my brother in-law three years ago though. It was blue with pink decals. Before that I had a Raleigh Pointe.

Any standard 8/9 speed hub will work but 8/9 speed cassettes are wider than 7 speed cassettes.
If you want to use a 8/9 speed hub with a 7 speed cassette you just need an inexpensive spacer (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=1289) to fill the gap.

To add to that, if you must have a 7 speed freehub, then you will be limiting yourself to some old hubs, and only in a low quality. With the spacer you can pick any hub and use it. Incidentally- when you buy a new cassette It is possible to use an 8 speed cassette and set the derailler to only use 7 of them. Then when money permits get a new set of 8 speed changers and instant upgraded bike.
