Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Miche cogs w/adaptor

I'm not experienced in swapping out cogs all the time, but this seems like a great idea to me. My understanding is that the Miche track cogs thread onto an adaptor which can basically slide on and off of the hub without having to use tools. Something tells me that you guys have all sorts of things to say about why this is not as advantageous as it appears to me at first glance... so what's the deal? Does anyone out there have good experiences with this?

i also stripped the lock ring threading on a hub because the cog had just a bit of play between the adapter and the lock ring and it pushed the lockring off the hub while skidding...
if yer gonna use it on the street make sure you get the adaptor on <i>real</i> damn tight, and the make sure the lockring is damn tight as well...

You've got it backwards - the adaptor threads onto the hub and the cogs attach to the adaptor via splines. In theory, it makes it easier to change cogs - you just have to remove the lockring and the cog pops right off. The downside is that you're stuck using miche cogs, but the adaptor works with pretty much any hub. A friend of mine runs the miche system on his phil hubs and really likes them. He's been messengering on them for a year or two with no problems.

Do a search - there's lots of opinions about them.

Businesscycles.com recommends using the Miche adapter only with a Miche hub and Miche lockring because of thread compatability issues.

I would like to get Miche hub and adapter system because I like to play around with different cogs.
I worry that the on again off again hard torque will shorten the life of the aluminum threads on the hub, and the Miche system seems to lessen the wear and tear on the hub.
Still, one has to take the lockring on and off, and that accounts for wear.

Eventually the cogs become loose on the carrier..,..feels like the cog is loose on the hub. Depends on mileage but the cog WILL develop some play between the carrier. Not really a safety issue but it feels like crap.

By cogs loose on the carrier does cavermech mean play between the Miche cog and the Miche adapter?

Yes that is exactly what he means. The fit between the cog and adapter eventually isn't as "tight" as the day that it is installed, and you'll be able to feel the cog wobble while tightened.

When this happens its time to replace the system. The good thing is that it is not that expensive to replace. When it DOES happen its not an overnight thing though, it just eventually starts getting some play in it...

The crappy thing is that you DO need special tools to do this (lockring removal tool).
So its different, but not necessarily a novel system that revolutionizes cogs and lockrings.

It's really not that hard to get a cog off on the fly using just a lockring spanner/wrench and your bike.

honestly though...unless you're riding on the track, how many actually take your cog off "on the fly" anyways?

yes that is a very unpleasant thing to happen, I bought a few miche sprockets but the unused ones went straight back to the shop after that happened to a 17 I rode through the winter. It feels like riding with a loose chain all the time!
