General Cycling Discussion - cellphones, and bikes?!

lovely, and you thought people driving while on the phone were crazy...

Well, Joe, I do sometimes talk on my cell phone while riding. But before you send the guys in white coats, let me explain. I would NEVER do it on the street. However, about 2.5 of my last 3 miles on my homeward commute is on a wide bike path along Lake Pontchartrain, with unlimited visibility and seldom other foot or bike traffic. I often whip out the phone and call one of my daughters, all of whom are about 80 miles away at college. It is a local call on my cell phone and doesn't even charge minutes because we have a family plan. It is a fun way to wind down a nice ride, and the girls get a kick out of it.

I dont have any problems with that, i just thought it was funny that they have a recharger that hooks up to your bike :) I always have my cell phone in my camelbak when i go mtn biking, incase i need help, or have any problems.

I would hate to see somebody riding there bike to work on a busy road while talking on there phone, and it looks to me that this is what there trying to sell at the site listed above.

Jeez, I go rideing/hikeing to get away from civilization no take with me. Emergency`s i handel the old way re-scource fullness.!!

One of my employees, Supergeek, is the "product owner" for PDAs and other wireless office devices. He tests these nasty little things with our network, puts on dog & pony shows, sells the management on the PDAs (admittedly dubious) usefulness.

He showed me a brochure that he picked up at a trade show... this company made bicycle handlebar mounts for Palm devices, and an accompanying cellphone holder for the Palm VII/cellphone linkup. One of the brochure photos showed a bike festooned with a PDA, cellphone, and GPS device.

Supergeek was genuinely excited about this stuff... and couldn't understand why I made a face at it.

"S-Geek," I told him, "It will be a good day when I throw a leg over my trusty Trek and ride out of here, after setting my desk on fire and smashing my PC with a fire-axe. I DO NOT want my office to follow me home."

In fact, my handlebar cyclo-computer is beginning to give me doubts...

I agree with Steve33. The last thing I want is to be pestered by the very people/things I am trying to escape on a ride. Additionally, many of the places I ride probably wouldn't get very good reception anyway.

I do think people who drive/ride while talking on cell phones are crazy. I also wish the law in my part of the world prohibiting that sort of behaviour was enforced more effectively. I don't know how many times I have been almost killed by drivers who clearly had their minds on things other than what they were doing!

In reference to handlebar computers. I use one to train they have a way of pushing you, but just to enjoy a nice ride leave it at home. Wish i could------ but im an ADDICT.!!!!! ha ha.
