Hey guys, we need some help from some of you creatives...A buddy (cavernmech) and I (he owns a shop in Toronto called Cavern Cycles and I own an online cycling business (www.bikeophile.com) are working together to put out a line of track bikes here in Toronto. This will be in addition to any brands that we both currently carry. It's really something we've both wanted to do for quite some time, so we've pooled our energies, talents and money and are working on our first run right now.

We're doing steel track frames based on the geometry of old 90's Rossin track frames. We're using round tubing, no oversized tubes at all. I will post pics once we have the first run done (5x56cm frames). This is more of a fun project than a big money maker for us. We are pretty sure we'll have them all sold fairly quickly but aren't going to try and make much off of them.

Well what I was hoping, was that some of you might have some ideas on a name...Being that I am BIKEOPHILE and he is CAVERN, we have tried to come up with some names that combine both our names...but nothing wonderful yet...

As an incentive...we will have a special prize (not a frame, but I promise it will be worth it) if anyone comes up with the name that we actually decide to use.

You can post ideas here, PM me, or email...if we get one that we decide to use, we'll post it here with a picture of the first completed frame once its done.

Thanks!!!

I'll get back to you when I've thought of a really good one. All the ones falling off the top of my head are either too goofy or too european sounding!

Sounds very cool..no names offhand, but nice project.
My bro may have...2500$ in high end chromoly tubes in Can?
Should I ask what and where? He was to build, but nothing so far.
They were brought to the other coast, b.c. He might want to sell them.
I'll see him Monday, I'll ask if he recieved.
They were round\butted HQ tubes.

these frames, are they lugged? what brand of steel are you using? will the frames be drilled for brakes? the fork- flat crown or sloping?

Bikeophile

- Jeff, sure please PM me with the details.

- Crust. We are not using lugs. Our goal is to make quality frames and keep them affordable, not only to bike nuts. The lugs would add more $$ to the final cost. We're using Columbus tubing. We have not decided 100% but I am fairly sure that we will NOT be having the frames drilled for brakes.

We're not building forks, but will be sourcing several options (Steel, Alum and Carbon options). So the rider could put front brakes on depending on which fork they chose. We are using 1 /18" head tubes which will give a lot of options for the forks.

So about the names...If we could get our business names incorporated, or our city (Toronto) that would be great, although any cool name would be considered!

I always like the shortening of Toronto personally... I would call the frame "T dot" Later versions can be "T dot One" "T dot Two" etc...

The whole T-Dot thing has kind of been ruined for us Torontonians by a fellow named Sean Desmond who decided that he knew how the 'T-Dot rolls' in really crappy song and dance...

Hmmm... I was thinking maybe something to do with the golden horseshoe... something to do with cave paintings... something to do with cold sexy steel... just brainstorming here... Toronto in joke type of stuff... Forte York.. I dunno, stuff like that.

I ran Bikeophile and Cavern through an anagram server. Some interesting combo's. One I like is Evil Bike. Unfortunately, it looks like someone else already has a company with that name... Too bad. A skull headtube badge would have looked neat.

BOXCARS. the 'x' and the 's' are the only letters missing from the combined names. plus it would already have a cool logo and a somewhat anti car name :p

Think long term- your operation may become bigger and more successful in the future, and you don't want to have to change the name down the road beacuse you've outgrown something that was "kewl" when you were in your twenties. Come up with a name (I'd go with something Italian or Italian-sounding, but that's just me) that combines either or both of your usernames, like Caverni or Bici Caverni. If you could somehow work the word "Velo" into the name, that would stand the test of time as well. Maybe you could use an Italian derivative of your surname.

(No, I have no Italian ancestry whatsoever, but their approach to bike style combined with the tradition of Campagnolo and other Italian component craftsmen puts them at the top of any list of aesthetic role models)

Another idea, since you're not using lugs, is to incorporate "tech" into the name somehow.

You're a bikeophile, and you haven't yet tried to personify your bikes? Varanese, or Bianca, or Rosalia, or Tessa, or Zola... all quality Italian names.

I mean, naming a bike is like naming a baby. I wouldn't imagine this would be too far off. I mean, I would totally ride a Varanese.

Then again, nothing beats the "Nessuno" name made up by bizcycles for the EAI italian frame, translating to "nobody." Bicipregio?

well--keeping with the whole FG theme of simplicity, why not just Toronto1, toronto2, etc---

or TFG1; TFG2, etc

Yeah, I admit that its good to have a name you can keep for a long time, so you don't have to pull a Timbuk2 and change your name from 'ScumBags' once you start getting some real market penetration. ;) However, another faux-italian name is the last thing I think you want... There are already too many Velo-iti-anca-olo bike companies out there, and the least you can do is actually be italian if you are going to use one.

How about things like, "Toronto Track" if you like your city and are proud of it. Or maybe, "North Star" for something classy, with a geographical bent still. Or if you really want something blending the names, "Subterranean Cycles"? Or "Track Spelunker" for something silly.

I'll try to think of some more... Have fun making your bikes, and good luck!

Edit, if you must use "Velo", why not, "Velophile"? ;)

peace,
sam

Good god, anything but T-Dot for the love of god. We get spammed by enough ******** losers on CL with that already.

Bikeophile, what's the target pricing on these frames? I'm in the market for a track frame.
How much would lugs add to the cost of the frame anyways? Lugs = teh win.

Since you are Canadian, how about "Maple Leaf Cycles"? I've always admired the beautiful Canadian flag and maybe you could have a cool maple leaf headbadge (the leaf itself, not the whole flag), but a real raised headbadge like a Litespeed or Rivendell, not just a decal. I think that would really set that off.

Have the words "Maple Leaf" in some sort of script on the downtube and a small Canadian flag somewhere on the seattube. I think that would be classy!

hmmm... I would say Hogtown cycles... but theres already that skate/bmx store on king street with that name (well, Hogtown extreme sports... and I think theres a skate park too). Still, very cool name, and fitting with toronto history... I'm just not sure how agreeable those guys are at that shop.
Anyways, heres a few Toronto related names:

Hogtown Cycles
Roadhog Bikes
QEW (Queen Elizabeth's Wheels)
Megacity Velocité (or Mega-City Velo-Cité --meaning 'Greater Toronto Area bike city')
Golden Horseshoe Cycles
Old York Cycles
Forté York Cycles
416-905 (or 416cycles or someting to do with area codes)
Sky-Drome Track Bikes (booo Rogers Centre)
The Right Track

Thats all for now!

maple leaf is an awesome idea! i think a redish/bronzish maple leaf headbadge on a frame would be sooo hot! the color a leaf in the middle of fall on the head tube would be $$$

Here at home we have a fairly new frame builder just identifying with the city... Milwaukee Bicycle Works. Obvious conclusion? Toronto Bicyle Works

Actually, it's a fairly new line but it's a pretty old builder. Milwaukee bikes are built by Waterford.
