Bicycle Mechanics - Scrapy brakes

Hi

Everytime I go out for a ride, after a few kms my brakes grab some metal-filings(its always the same material!) and start scraping the wheel...previously it was only once every few weeks, but nows it's happening almost every day! (I use my bike mostly for commuting trips). I have a few conclusions

1. The brake manufacturer has a conspiracy that involves mixing filings into the brake pads, thus making me dig out massive amounts of rubber everytime i fix it, making the brakes wear out faster.

2. The wheel rim is made of dodgy metal stuff that scrapes off.

3. The road that I take everyday is laden with metal filings that get trapped in the brakes

4. My pads are magnetic and attract metallic stuff.

What do you guys think is the problem, and how do i fix it? It's really annoying having the remove the brakes to scrape the stuff off all the time.

Plus the bike is a hybrid that is about 4 months old.

It's the brekpads TanSC. They are too hard for the rim. Had the same problem on my bike a while back, $3 replacement pads fixed that.

Once you start hearing that scrapy sound, your rims are getting damaged. You can probably see it on your rims now. While you're at it check the pad alignment and thoroughly clean your rims before putting on the new set.

So how do i know whether the replacement pads are too hard? ANd i went to the LBS and woah...so many types of pads...which to use?

I think the pad rubber is a bit dry...i've noticed some cracking...

You didn't mention what make are your brakes, but I would Guess they are Shimano. If I am right, read this writeup. Shimano Pads (http://www.chainreaction.com/brakeshoes.htm).. and for replacement pads I will recommend Koolstop!..

Heck, I'd call the LBS and have him take care of it, especially if there is some substantial amount of damage to the rims. Would something like that be under warranty if the pads were already dry at 4 months old? What bike is it? Was the bike last year's model?

its a promax break bad....im not sure whether warranty covers normal wear and tear, but i'll check

and btw, how do you access how damaged the rims are? THey're scratched up, but how do i tell how deep the scratches go?

It certainly is a "break" pad That's not "normal" wear and tear by any means. Have them replace those with a better set of brake pads. Preferrably Jagwire or Kool Stop

Yep, I had the same ones, utter garbage. I think as long as you get anything besides Promax you're safe.
