Introductions - Hello from Detroit Rock City

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hello,
I've been surfing this site for a couple of weeks, and I am ready to start cycling again. I haven't ridden a bike since I was a kid. I am a little worried about riding in the suburbs on the roads here in Metro Detroit. I don't see any bike lanes anywhere, and hardly see any riders on the roads in Troy.
This website really is a great resource.
That's because there are no bike lanes here, only a pathetic excuse for a Multi Use Trail that is about 7 miles long and goes nowhere near any useful place.
I live in Clinton Township and you'll see me alot riding on Groesbeck, Romeo Plank, Cass, and all around Mount Clemens.
My commute takes me from 16 and Groesbeck all the way to 23 and Hayes, nice commute might I add.

I live in Sterling Heights and for my shorter rides, generally ride through residential areas. No major roads for me. When I have more time, I pack up the bike and head to Stony Creek.
I always have to laugh when someone on the board suggests that I should commute to work (from Sterling Heights to Dearborn). Yeah, right.
Hello fellow Michiganders... I have found the Metro Detroit area a "not-so-bike-friendly" area. But ever since I moved to Grand Blanc (near Flint) I have found so many great areas to ride. Farm land areas provide long rolling hills with great scenery, wide lanes (for farm equipment) and most importantly, low traffic. I've been able to do 3-4 hour rides and only be passed by a dozen or so cars. I understand the problems of commuting to Dearborn (I used to work for Ford) and that would be near suicide.

Well, it probably would be faster to do it by bike, all kidding aside.
But I'd doubt you'd live long enough to brag about the exploits.
I used to drive from Clinton Twp. to Livonia daily, in the 2 years I did that commute I saw more serious automobile accidents than I have in the entireity of my life.
