Some old statistics I found:

"In 1991, more than 8,000 bicycles were stolen in Toronto, 2,500 more than were stolen in New York City and 50% more than Montreal. In 1992, reported bicycle thefts has risen to 11,745, with an estimated value of $6,000,000. The number of cases solved by the police was only 2.2%."

I remember seeing a recent figure of 15,000, though I can't seem to find a source for it anywhere. I'm curious to know if we still hold the title.

Minneapolis, number 9.

number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine...

I have to wonder though, with all the derilect bikes locked to bike racks, light posts, fences, signs and other places, if these are counted as "stolen?"

According to this site (http://www.cam.net.uk/home/100.Thoday/simon/bicycles/theft_reduction/cycle_theft_project.pdf), Cambridge (UK) has 3000 reported cycle thefts per year. Bear in mind that Cambridge only has approx. 100000 inhabitants.

Quite something that I've only had 2 bikes stolen so far in maybe 10 years of cycling around it...

"The latest FBI Uniform Crime Report (2000) shows that the average price of the bicycles stolen is $276."

These people must not even care what they steal.

Munich's not too bad - lots of bike and i think relatively little theft danger.

i pretty sure Amsterdam is the worst in the world!

as far as i know Portland OR is not too bad for bike theft (compared to NYC or others)

Austin TX is pretty bad, mostly b/c there is a big resell market from the 48,000 students.

Check out Lucerne Switzerland. When I was visiting 8 yrs ago there were hundreds of bikes parked in the middle of town unlocked, or with a cheap lock that you could cut with a pair of pliers.
