This is the plan to help the wife on the bigger climbs here. In fact, she has been running a 28 (Salsa) in place of the 30 for a while with no issues. The two new TA rings arrive soon.

I tried to find a 38, but no joy. Though the capacity exceeds Campa's recommendation, I think that will be OK. My only real concern is the dynamic of the 39 to 26 shift - do it with care, I suspect.

Any comments?

On my mountain bike, which has a SunTour XC6000 front derailleur, I successfully ran the same 16-tooth bottom drop to which Sydney alludes with a Sugino 24-40-48 combination. As long as I shifted in a careful, low-torque, old-school fashion, it never gave me any trouble, although I could jam things up a bit by moving the lever too rapidly and/or by pressing too hard on the pedals while upshifting.

I've got a 52 42 28 on my cross, and it shifts fine. I am using a friction shifter though, so YRMV.
