From danscomp:
Trail design frame with chromoly downtube, DK Trail fork with chromoly steerer, DK 2-pc bars, 1-1/8" stem, DK Vice grips, Tektro rear U-brake, 175mm forged 3-pc cranks, Wellgo platform pedals, 36H alloy wheels with 14mm axles, 1.95" Kenda K-Rad tires, padded dirt seat with 8mm rails. 20" Toptube (34 lbs)

I'd say probably not. 34 lbs is heavy, and it's probably not all that tough. DK vice grips are crap, mine have basically dissolved into smooth rubber from about a month of use.
What exactly do you mean by 'advanced' beginner bike, anyway? If you're 'advanced', you won't be happy with it. If you're a beginner, you might be alright with it for a while.

You're basing your opinion on the weight of the bike (which isn't heavy at all - 34 pounds was light just three or four years ago) and on the quality of the grips. Do yourself a favor and get a clue before giving advice.

Judging by what it says on that page, it doesn't seem like a terrible deal for a MSRP of US $179.99. If you can get the extra fifty dollars, look into an Eight Pack, though. The whole front triangle is 4130 chromoly, as opposed to just the steerer and downtubes on the Step-Up.

Neither of them are really great bikes in comparison to something more expensive, but if you're just a beginner it's unlikely that you'll do too much damage in the first place; just make sure to maintain it properly and it should be fine.

I said 34 lb is heavy, because in my opinion 34 pounds is too heavy for a simple bike that doesn't really have high end, beefy components or even that nice of a frame.

I said what I said about the grips because I have a pair, and I decided to state my experience with them.

If the guy wanted professional advice, that's what shops are for. If he wanted opinions, from people who vary in experience and knowledge, he chose a good place to ask.

Beginners can do a good bit of damage to bikes... especially those who call themselves 'advanced' in the same sentence. Anyone can land perfectly on a huge dirt jump, but it takes a true advanced beginner to hit the lip and break their bike.. lol
