Okay, I'm buying a X bike primarily for commuting but would also like to be able to race. I was drooling over disc brakes for the commuting factor but know they're not allowed for racing and have decided I don't want to deal with having to swap them out.

It's down to the three bikes shown above. I'd appreciate your thoughts/recommendations. Thanks!

Go steel. I too was drooling over discs. Put hydraulics on both my and my GF's moutain bikes. I do not believe the additional stopping power is worth the pain in the _ss. They seem to need almost constant attention.

If you are into looking cool and stopping power, I say go for it. If ease and low maintenance are your thing, stick with canti's.

unless it's changed, I thought discs could be ridden in events other than those requiring UCI licences. Unless you race Elite, you should be OK.

for now, but USCF is phasing in UCI rules by 2007, I think. and this fall is already 2006 season in CX. so it might only be one more season with discs allowed.
