Bicycle Mechanics - Road bar (26.0) in a MTB stem (25.4)?

I just bought a used Cannondale road bike with a 110mm stem, and think I'd like to try something a bit shorter. I've got a 90mm MTB stem I'm not using, and would like to give it a try.

The 26.0mm bar seems to fit OK in the 25.4mm stem, but I'm wondering if I might be doing any damage to the bar (it's a 6061AL Deda). Any idea if I can get away with this for a training ride or two, just to check out the fit?

If I like the stem size, any problem running this setup on a permanent basis, or should I just bite the bullet & buy a proper road stem?

For aluminum bars, it works fine - the stretch inherent in the aluminum stem will compensate for the difference. Don't try it with carbon bars, though.
