Thank you everyone for your comments. Parenting a teenager IS the hardest job in the world! Parenting kids up to that point is a piece of cake. Teenagers and their world are vVery up and down, day to day, emotional rollercoasters, life and death stuff - every single day, sometimes all in 15 minutes.

Man, are you ever right! My daughter is also 15, and I have a son who just turned 17.

It's much harder for the girls, and in this day and age they are up against an all-pervasive media that distorts female body images as a matter of course, and plays on adolescent anxieties to sell products, in addition to the usual concerns of an adolescent. The only thing I can suggest for her is what I've already suggested (minus the beer joke ;) )... to a healthy, balanced diet, add oils where appropriate (on pastas [!], sandwiches, vegetables [sauté in quality oil rather than boil/steam]) and snack on nuts like almonds, peanuts, and cashews. Both are very healthy, and are caloric enough to make a positive difference without radically changing her diet (and your shopping).

Dude... that doesn't disprove whole milk's abilities. It mean you need to drink/eat more.

The milk thing is just the last line... if everything else fails, adding a half gallon of chocolate milk to your diet WILL make you put on weight. PERIOD.

Its what you do if you are stuck, it is tried and true, and it DEFINATELY WORKS.

As to milk being unhealthy... there is no sound medical evidence that this is the case. All of India bases its diet on milk products. They do just fine, and have for millenia. Maybe if whole milk was the staple of your diet for a decade, you could have problems but in this case, the anti-milk stuff is rediculous ideological based furvor. Please avoid crowding this forum with new age crap.

I eat whenever I'm hungry, and whatever I want really. This includes milk, yogurt, cheese, etc. But then again, I'm also an Ectomorph.

Poor me :D

Homoginiation is a big part of the problem with milk it coats the proteins with the fats causing plaque in the arteries. People didn't drink milk in adulthood untill about 5000 years ago and the bones discovered of people pre-dairy are much denser than those that did dairy.

Woops that should read "homogenized".

And, pasturizing is good for shelf life but it destroys all the enzymes that help to break down the milk when drank.

Milking invented by white folks? Tell that to the Maasai! If there's any truth to the book Guns, Germs, and Steel, which won a Pulitzer and appears well researched, white people were about last in line to invent a lot of stuff, pastoralism included.

Funny thing too, the Maasai tend to be rail-thin until they attain the rank of elder, and get to sit around and drink beer - then they get chunky. Maybe your daughter needs beer.

Thats why you'd have to FORCE FEED chocolate milk if you wanted to gain weight. It never fails. It is the juice of the gods for ectomorphs.

As to others and this "coating proteins," I suggest you cite a primary source. Because it sounds like pseudo-science poppycock to me. Care to explain what form this "coating" takes? What chemicals compose the "coat?"

From what I know about nutrient uptake, the entire idea is plain rediculous.

There is no plural form of "annecdote" as the word you are thinking of is most likely "anecdote."

"Researchers determined that certain animals were domesticated around 9000 B C and by 5000 B C milk was obtained and consumed. "

From Milk history link #1 (http://www.foodreference.com/html/artmilk.html)

"Human consumption of animal milk is usually linked to the beginnings of grain farming some 10,000 years ago.[ii] Most treatises on the history of the human diet assume that animal husbandry began with the dawn of agriculture, making dairy products a relatively recent human food. But archeological evidence indicates that 30,000 years ago people in the High Sinai Peninsula at the north end of the Red Sea used fences to aid in confining and breeding antelope for their milk.[iii] They likely were one of many cultures that used milk long before the beginnings of agriculture."

and

"In the whole range of organic matter, milk is the only thing purposely designed and prepared by nature as food. Early humans did not hesitate to appropriate this gift of nature for their own use. No state of civilization has ever been attained without the subjugation of animals and the subsequent use of their milk; from the infancy of human society, distinction has been assigned to the bovine species in history."
(Emphasis mine)

Both from Milk link #2 (http://www.drrons.com/raw_milk_veritas.html)

I have zero interest in the dairy industry, and the same for the new-age propogandists. When something is espoused so one-sided, experience tells me I'm not hearing the whole truth. So, if dairy says milk is 100% safe, and the vegan-PETA crew says its wrong and may not be all that healthy, I'm thinking its somewhere in the middle. Which puts it right there with darn near everything else we consume. Moderation is the rule, excess is harmful.

I'm going to drink some chocolate milk today, just cuz. =)

It is the juice of the Gods. Whoever thought putting chocolate in milk was a good idea should have received some award that was really big and really shiny.

I didn't read this whole thread so I'm sorry if I repeat someone elses statements. The desire to INCREASE bodyfat is... odd. She should eat as healthily as possible either every 3 hrs or when she's hungry, whichever she prefers. If she wants larger breasts... there are other ways to go about that. Albeit equally destructive.

I do disagree with one thing about Chocolate milk being the nectar of the gods.

THAT would have to be Strawberry milk of course...no substitute :). Also, Blueberry milk is greater than Choc. :).

*This is more joking than anything, but my tastes still stand accordingly :).*

Cheers.

Milk is designed for food yes; but human milk comes from human breasts. We are the only animal on earth that suckles from another animals tit. Cows milk is for turning a baby calf into a huge cow, so in a way grunk is right... :)

Its not just the milk... its the chocolate too. Name a more calorically dense food that is easy to slug? You can't. Thats why it works. Drink with every meal. Watch the pounds come.

And yes, humans are the only species the domesticate animals... so what? Milk has been a healthy part of the diet of most of humanity since before civilization began. We're designed to love it.

To give you an idea of what I eat, I'll tell you what I had for dinner last night.

2 racks of baby back ribs, 2 heaping piles of mashed potatos, 2 heaping piles of peas/corn, a bowl of fruit loops, 10 double stuf oreos, a glass of whole milk, and two glasses of cranberry juice. And rather than gain weight, I'm losing weight. That's how I eat all day.

Its pretty cool that I can eat so much since I'm so active and an ectomorph, but it sucks because if I don't eat like that I'm always hungry :(.

A divine curse

PenguinDeD...you sound EXACTLY like me. I've been (sadly) maintaing my weight for about 2 weeks now (going to add more later so I gain), and for desert/after my 6 other meals, I had a bag (11 cups) of popcorn, a large beefsteak tomato with garlic powder, a pita loaf with pasta sauce, a Soy Ice Cream Bar, 2 slices Herb Toast with fruit sweetend Ketchup, 2 Van's Belgium Waffles with Choc. Soy Ice Cream, some slices of Watermelon and 2 cups of Kashi Good Friends/Honey Puffed cereal mix in Silk.

and a cup o' joe :).

It sometimes gets really annoying trying to maintain a healthy weight..:(. But still love that fact that I can eat more than a family of four and not become big heh.

Cheers.

It is really annoying. I hate having to choose between eating all the time and starving. As I sit here, I have a headache because I'm hungry, even though I just ate :(, and I'm going to go to sleep this way because I really don't feel like eating yet again today. And the worst is when you're eating and you get a pukey feeling but you're not full yet, simply because you've eaten so much already.

I'm getting there! Ugh! My food bill has about doubled, and my afternoons at work are filled with complaints: "I JUST ate, I have NO more food with me, but I'm getting HUNGRY! AGAIN! And I don't go home for 2.5 hours!" I'm spending so freakin much at the local health food cafe it's ridiculous. I'll try to pack enough for my needs today, but I don't hold out much hope.

I just want to point out something I was thinking. The very people who protest against (fill in the blank) are only able to do so because the country they live in has ascended (thru the very use of whatever it is they are protesting) to a position that affords the protesters the 'high ground' from which to espouse their virtuous position.

I have yet to see a PETA demonstration in any country where folks are actually starving.... (Unless of course the starving folks were being exploited by the healthy protesters because of their plight....but that’s another story)

As an aside...you know we all ride bikes and some, if not all of the parts of those bikes are made in 3rd world countries...

Lets face it, we all make concesions in our lives and if someone wants / needs to gain weight, drinking milk for a few months is FAR from the worst thing they could do. So, all you soy drinkers, be happy that no animal is harmed in the manufactuer of that product, and I'm sure you're comforted KNOWING that the farmer that grew the soy didnt in any way harm mother earth in the process...
