BMX - any other middle aged BMXers?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

IM new here and dont wanna be a fish outta water.
Standard Rider= me.
There's a few older guys that do freestyle and some pretty crazy stuff. I think they other guys in their late 20's or 30's mostly lurk, and don't post too much. There's also a boatload of little snot-nosed punks that don't usually have much to contribute, but are mostly tolerated, with a few exceptions. Even though I'm a mountain bike rider, I race a cruiser, and just got my wife a BMX as well. Oh, there's also someone around our age that seems to be collecting every vintage BMX ever made. Not one of each model, I swear he's collecting every example still around. Be envious.

what kind of Haro do you have?
NFR5111

I have a Haro Backtrail X24. Its a beast, I am 6'4" and not light at all, and while I am not grabbing tons of air or jumping doubles or anything, with that bike I feel like I could....it doesn't feel like it would break or anything.
The only thing I really don't like about it is that it does feel kind of small, I feel like I am riding a 20" at times as opposed to a 24". I am going to look at a new school OM Flyer 26" from SE at some point.....

Skyways are cool, I had a few come thru my door. I would love to find a Skyway cruiser, but those are so unbelievably rare its not even funny.
One can dream.....

Ha! I show up at my local track with my funny accent, an XTR hat and an Intense Racing shirt, and they all ask if I'm Canadian, and assume I'm a pro. They're pretty let down when I tell them I'm just an importer, which is why I get the cool shirts and gear.

Yeah, the shirt's on it's way. Just wait by your mailbox, ok? This weekend I was surrounded by about a half dozen 12-15 year old kids on MTB dirt jump bikes, and I (and the missus) was on my BMX. So very Twilight Zone like. We've been so spoiled by gears, disc brakes, and suspension, it's taken me a while to learn to be really smooth again. I'm not going back to the race track until I can ride like a 12 year old again. :D

Keep waiting. Oh, I posted a few photos from our National qualifiers yesterday. I'll be posting some more tonight. You'll have to look up the thread yourself, ya slacker.

I'm new aswell and 30. I am into racing and trails. riding 20" forever.
Someday, a little voice from your lower back will suggest a cruiser.
That little green guy from Star Wars? What about him? Oh wait, that's Yoda. Sorry.
I watched my friend's 9 year old clear the triples at our track today. Operation Humble is now complete.

what do you want me to do again?
Hi, everyone!
Just got back from an after work ride with the missus. I took the cruiser, she took her FS. Isn't that spousal abuse?

I'm kicking around the BMX cruiser racing bug again. At 38yrs old, the problem is the guys that were fast back 20 years ago, are now fast and have faster kids. I'm gonna stick to using a single speed mountain bike so I can use it for double duty. I'm also too big for anything else at 6'8" and 240lbs. So I'm dusting off the Aero pants (you know, the NON tapered leg ones) and all you guys look out. Not that I'm fast, just look out because I don't remember anything from 20 years ago and I might run into you!
Got some news for you. The jumps are much bigger, the berms much steeper. Take a look at our track (Aussie BMX Photos thread) if you haven't been to a track lately. At our club, there's the hardcore guys that race for the top 3 spots, and guys like me, that race each other to finish without too many crashes.

Im 33 years old, ride the concrete skate park we have here in town. Also some dirt jumps out in the woods behind me. My bike is a piece of cr*p but I love riding. Can anyone recommend me some good knee pads for old big knees?
I've got a box of Lizard Skins knee pads, but I'd suggest any of the big brands like Fox, 661, etc, that make a shin/knee guard. I like being able to walk as well as ride.

I still use rectors and ugp shin pads but am looking to get some of the new combo style pads. I have tried the fox and they were great. i'm sure any of the mainstream brands will treat you well. Just try them on in the store and go with what feels good, dont guess on size I'm thin but fit in large.

Guys, don't forget to add your 70's and 80's foolishness to the other "Old School" thread.

Hey, I took my son (5yr old) to the local track the other day, he loved it....I loved it....so what do I do now? I think I'm hooked again and I haven't even got a BMX bike. I'm 31 and would love some advice on bikes etc for BMX racing. Whats around these days, brands etc? I guess I should get something for my son also. THe little 16inch he rides will be lucky to make it round the track...man those jumps are big these days.
Oh how I crave the feel of a 20inch......BIKE! That kinda sounds really bad hah? :p
It's not too early to get him into racing. There's a couple of kids in the under 8 class at our track that ride 16" and even 10" bikes. They just pedal like mad up and over everything, all around the track. And get yourself a bike too, heaps fun. My wife and I have cruisers, as 24" wheels suit us better, but plenty of guys in the over 30 class race 20" bikes. You can see my local track in the Aussie BMX Racing Photos thread.

thanks for the good times!~
To whoever was looking for some protection (knee/shin) - there's a bit of info in the latest BMX PLUS mag. Not a lot, but some helpful stuff.
We need to bring back cereal with "Sugar" in the name. Remember when "Corn Pops" were "Sugar Corn Pops"? Truth in advertising, that's what I'm saying. And Count Chocula, he would have kicked Capt'n Crunch's butt. Hmmm, I think it's breakfast time.

Do you mean RL Osborn? Ive been around the scene for way too long to want to admit... and i still can hardly ride.

RL & Chris Day - The original Hammer wearing riders... Man, I was using a set of their prototype shin guards - they used steel coils sewn into the neoprene before they switched over to foam padding. Pure red on both sides.
I think I still have my old Haro Mode 3 leathers in a closet somewhere as well. Size 28 waist... whatever.

I am 27 about to be 28.
The last time I wore a 28, a lady in a Ferrari stopped to ask if those were Bugle Boy pants I was wearing...

Is Bugle Boy even in business anymore? I remember having some of those back when I wore a 28, back in '91 when I was in the first grade.

Not to be pushing the SoCal thing to the limits or anything, but they had headquarters and an outlet store in Simi Valley.
[edit] I bought a nice pair of khaki cargo pants at their giant outlet sale not too many years ago. They had boxes of pants for like $8/pair, and shirts for $3 or something crazy like that. My wife, being an Aussie, wouldn't know the commercial, but she likes the way they fit me. Perhaps she needs a Ferrari.

I guess you'd only get that comment if you've seen that episode of Top Gear, but check this (http://www.noblecars.com/model-m400.htm).

For well under $20k, I can build myself one of these (http://www.factoryfive.com/table/ffrkits/roadster/roadsterkit.html) bad boys. The performance figures for one with a stock engine are plenty impressive. It's wife-approved, and well within our reach.

I'd rather save up a bit more than tenty grand and get the almighty Ariel Atom. Now there's a vehicle.
http://www.arielmotor.co.uk/04/frames.htm
Before I even got through the spec sheet, I was thinking it had to be Honda powered. It's a cross between a Civic and a sport bike. Reminds me of one of my favorites. The Lotus Seven copy - Rotus Seven, with a Toyota motor.

It accelerates faster than a sport bike, actually, and has the fastest lap time on Top Gear's track; beating even the Ferrari Enzo, Porsche Carrera GT, and Maserati MC12. I would kill for an Atom.
If I could get past the looks of it, I'd probably like it a bit more. On paper, it looks like one of the projects I've made up in my head - Honda powered, lightweight screamer. I think it was the Shogun that inspired me way back when. You may be too young to remember that one. Before the Ford SHO was a V8 pile, it had a Yamaha 5 valve motor. Some engineers decided that would be perfect in the backseat of the little Ford Fiesta. But I've wanted a Cobra since beofre I got my license nearly 20 years ago. Some day...
What's up with the monkey face?
