Mountain Biking - My 21.5lbs bike...=D

Hey guys, i'm a newbie here and thought i'd post up a pic of my ride. 21.5lbs as measured on a digital scale legal for trade:)

Is that a Norco Team frame?

not a team issue, but it's a '98 Torrent (before it turned into a Freeride Hardtail). The team issue at the time was made from Reynolds 853 steel. This frame was the lightest out of their line up so i got it (got an awesome deal on it too $350 for frame).

I asked because I'm waiting for a bike shop to let me know if they have a Team frame available. The price is only CA$399. That's a deal!

Yah, that's a good deal. I suppose it's the steel frame? I know back a year or two..(i'm not sure about now) they had a team issue frame that was titanium. Same parts as the steel, but Ti frame...i wanted one of those so badly...:(

We don't get Norco bikes in the UK, or that I've seen, but they look pretty cool...

wow! i have the same frame! mine is either a '97 or '98 Norco Torrent.

it was my main MTB until this March i bought a full suspension, so i now have the Norco outfit with a rack and panniers for commuting. i doubt i will ever sell it...

good to know if i ever wanted to i could really make it into something special --- i bought mine new but not from a regular shop so it had different components and a Manitou TPC fork (not sure what it came with from the factory). i have since replaced almost everything (first better with a SID fork, race face headset, specialized saddle) and then the last 2 years when i have been poor with crappier stuff (mostly LX, cheap hubs, Judy XC fork)

i don't think mine was every less than 23lbs and now i think it's more like 24lbs! nice bike!

Rich-the riding is great here! Lot's of places to go to and not too far to drive. North Shore is here, and Whistler is about 3 hours away. Great riding place here in Vancouver, BC. How's England?

Nathank-well, the lime green colored one is a '98 for sure. It came w/ a matching colored Marzocchi Bomber Z2 at the time w/ black raceface cranks, mostly XT components w/ XTR vbrakes and levers. It was pretty heavy from the shop in stock trim, but i got mine as a frame only and built it up. The year after, it was a black frame (or was it navy blue?) but that was the last time Norco offered the Torrent as an XC machine. It became a freeride HT after that...

Very nice bike ... I am a sucker for many of the Canadian brands (Balfa, Rocky Mt, Norco....). By the way I saw that Vancouver overtook Amsterdam as the top pot smoker city.

Hi Mash,

the riding in the UK can be quite varied, but you really need to go to the north of the country, or the South West, or even Wales to get anything really narly :D

I come from Bournemouth originally, and we have the Dorset Coast Path which has great scenery and some excellent downhills...unfortunately, Tonbridge is a little flat...but great if you like orchards :D

I don't ride light weight bikes but hey sweet ride...perfect for commuting in Vancouver I am sure and riding some of those trails. :) My ht currently sits on the brink of 37 pounds...

How does the 100mm SID hold up?

i miss my steel frame sometimes (at least my butt does)

I've had no problems with the SID at all. It is 100 times more plush than my first gen. SID! as long as you do your oil changes and clean the wipers often, it'll work really well. most of my friends feel that it's almost like a coil sprung fork. amazing plushness.
the downsides to it that i've noticed are that (like almost all rockshox to date) the bushings wear rather quickly compared to others, and the damping cartridge (hydra air) changes it's feel when it gets to about 5 degrees Celsius and below..kinda odd for an oil damped fork. i wish it came with boots as well (but the XXX Seals work really well and look neat to boot!). and compared to other forks (read Marzocchi) the SID 100 is not the stiffest fork out there. if i corner fast enough, this fork combined w/ my Mavic Crossmax flexes enough to rub on the brake pads; and i only weigh 140lbs...

As far as the SID, I used to have an 80mm SID SL. Great fork and very light, but the flex was too much for me. I weigh about 25lbs more than you and in technical stuff my front wheel was all over the place. Also running Crossmax.
