My '72 Bottechia project moves on.
A new chain eliminated the irriating mumbly bumping noises from the RD area... may still replace the pulley wheels if I can find some low-cost options.
The RD spring tension was a BEAR to fix.. but I did. the Pulley Wheel also impinged on the(too) LARGE (32T!) cog, so I took matters in my own hands (MacGyvered) and removed the drop out adjust screws (which were pretty twisted and gnarly); this allowed me to move the wheel BACK back a bit, providing more daylight between RD and large COG. Chain tension was also improved but not strained.
Test ride reveals that this is a spry old road bike. Nice frame weight and that long, loping frame geometry. Hard to get used to the DT shifters after growing accustomed to the 'brifters' on my Felt. The 27" tires are funny... big and soft. May look at High pressure options some time. It will make a nice commuter.
The Freewheels is sorta weird: something on the order of 14-32T spread (over 5 cogs!) the jumps from 3-4-5 cog is huge. As such, I'm considering at an upgrade to a 6-speed freewheel, with a large cog of 28 or so. Currently it has a Suntour 'PERFECT' Freewheel on it. Ebay seems to be a good option for running down 6-speed freewheels... but I'm not sure which one's are equivalent or compatible. some are listed as 'indexed' freewheels (which seem to be later than my vintage?) Or does it matter?
