Triathlon - How to Integrate Running and Cycling

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm a roadie, but I run cross country for my high school in the fall. Over the Summer I need to start getting ready for cross country, just getting some miles in on a regular basis. I also really want to keep riding and racing the bike. I've been reading here and elsewhere about working the two together and I've seen a lot saying that running will hurt cycling. Is this true?

My current cycling training schedule is basically off Monday, light Tuesday, training race/hard intervals Wed., light w/ pickups Thurs, Hard Fri w/ intervals (usually team ride), race/hard ride Sat. and Sun.

For cross country, in the coming months, I'll have team runs in the evenings. How should I work these two sports to maximize performance in each? Is there any advice you tri guys can give? I'd rather sacrifice a bit of running over cycling if I had to. I'd like to do a duathlon or two later in the summer if I got into strong enough shape. Thanks.

Through the summer, when you'll be racing on the bike, keep the intensity of your runs lower. This is what you need going in to cross country anyway, since you'll get plenty (probably too much) anaerobic work once the school season starts. Use the running to get aerobic minutes in the summer and do your quality workouts on the bike.

Do you ride for a team?

Did you ever think about getting a coach for riding and/or running. One of the top coaches in the country is in your area at www.Ftness-Concepts.com

Good luck,

Ken

Yes, I'm on a team. I have a cycling workout from my coach. I have a running workout from my XC coach, but I'm basically going to let that slide.

Thanks for the advice, I'll go for lower intensity running miles over the summer. Thanks.
