The weather was nearly perfect for this year's Horsey Hundred in Georgetown Kentucky. There was a total of 6 lowracers, and if some of the hills on Saturday's century route were a trifle big, most of the terrain was custom designed for fast recumbents. The scenery was as beautiful as the weather. This picture was taken by Larry Varney from the comfort of his Catrike. That's Airxxxwolf and I, near the bottom of a 41 mph downhill. I'm in the yellow jersey.

Great shot, but it looks like there's someone way ahead of you!

Yeah me! by about a mile or so..........

anyways, I'll bet that roadie didn't stay ahead of John and Don very long. I'm guessing by this picture that the poor roadie was overtaken in about 11 seconds time.

Interesting, I keep reading this sort of thing on recumbent groups but on every organized ride that I have ever done where there were recumbents, the recumbents are always the last to finish. I never seem to see these fast recumbents I hear about on the road.

I led a couple of rides at an LAB national rally a couple of years ago and spent both days nursing recumbent riders around Madison County, Florida.

Now, don't get me wrong. I think they look like a lot of fun, but why the "us versus them" attitude so common among recumbent riders?

I gotta agree with that statement...It harkens toward the elitist attitude some roadies have for other cyclists on the road. I don't like it from either camp and I ride both. Despite the fact that I really do want to own a LR its this whole we're better then they are attitude that turns me off. I heard it a lot in the roadie camp, and I'm now I'm seeing the same ugly trend in the LR camp. It makes me want to distance myself from either group and just do my own thing...Oh wait I do that already. So when I do eventually buy and ride my own LR I'll probably still be riding by myself and enjoying the fun I get out of it.

BTW - It looks like the ride was a lot of fun.

If it reminds you of the elitist attitude of some roadies, there's a reason. After you've been told enough times that your bike is undesirable because it 'can't do hills,' then you tend to take a perverse pleasure in shattering the naysayers' comfortable ignorance. Lowracer1, who is a bit on the competitive side, had one of those 'challenges.' Rather than repeat the account, I'll point you here (http://tinyurl.com/dgzx9) LR1's handle there is CKAudio.

I was just there for the ride, and did my normal pace. That meant an enjoyable stretch riding with Airxxxwolf between rest stops. I also rode a while with Dave from Davinci Designs (an upright rider.) Fact is, I passed a lot of bikes, from fat tires to fancy TT bikes and yes, recumbents too. It's even possible that I was passed a time or two over the course of the weekend, but of course those accounts wouldn't make for a very good story...
