Bicycle Mechanics - What is this part called?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hey! I have two questions...first, i need to purchase a part for an old mongoose that a neighbor gave to me...i guess the best way to describe the part is its the sheild that holds the bearings in place where the pedal-rod makes contact with the frame...the rod goes through this metal part and it has threads on its circumference...before, my father cut a peice of metal and wedged it in to keep the bearings from falling out of the side, but unfortunately it failed. what is this part called so i can talk to the guy at the local bike shop? if you need me to draw or take a picture, i will :)
also, i have one more question. If i were to put pegs on the back axle of my bike, would they go on after the nuts that hold the axle to the frame are put on, or would the pegs act as the nut, holding the axle? the reason i ask this is becakse with the nuts on, the axle only extends about 1/4 of an inch out, so there is only a little bit of room to add anything and i wouldnt feel safe...so could i just remove the nuts and use the pegs in place of the nuts? thanks alot!! :)

theres a picture i drew...the part i need is in green. the bearings are located right behind it in that little cylinder. please help!! thanks folks!
its just a nut, take the bike into the shop and have them put a new one in.
as for the pegs they go on before the bolt, and then you tighten the bolt which in turn snugs the peg to the drop out.
Those are called bearing cups. They are part of the bottom bracket, and it is unlikely you will be able to just buy them seperately. If you're lucky, the bike shop may have some of the right kind taken off a similar dept. store bike that will fit. More than likely, you will need to purchase a whole new BB. You will want to take your bike with you to the shop so they can get the sizes correct. I am almost certain you will probably need to purchase a new crankset as well since I believe the crankset you have (assuming your picture is a fairly accurate representation) is a one-piece crank and the BBs you'll find are meant for three-piece cranks where the crank arms are bolted onto the spindle.

There are still a number of commercially available parts for 1 piece (Ashtabula) cranks and bottom brackets to suit them. I think the company Wald is the major manufacturer/distributor... http://www.bikepartsusa.com/view.phtml?f_c=Bottom+brackets The Wald, pyramid and other brands have replacement 1 piece entire bottom brackets here for about 6 bucks! I have no affiliation with or knowledge of that particular vendor, but it shows that there is still some (CHEAP!) availability.

Yeah, don't bother moving to a three piece crank, even if they suggest it at the shop, it'll just set off a cascade of upgrades that you just don't want to get into right now.
One piece bottom brackets are still available, and even if they have to sell you an entire bottom bracket, instead of just the replacement part, it will be a cheap and easy fix.
peace,
sam
I'm starting to think this is a BMX bike. I guess I should have picked up on that from the second question about the pegs.

No, it is a guy that spent his last dollar on an Ottrot with ergo record shifters and had to get a one piece crank to stay under budget. ;) The pegs are for paying, bike-taxi customers so he can get out of debt.

Careful you don't hurt that knee hopping around with your foot in your mouth. I knew from his first post what he was referring to. Dealer cost in the J&B catalog is a buck o' nine from Wald. Had you too been graciously donating your time and materials to help keep kid's BMX bikes on the track, you would have known that too.

Actually there are two different kinds of pegs. Dirtjump told you about bolt-on pegs. If you have screw-on pegs, just use them to replace the axle nuts but make sure that you get them nice and tight.

He really needs a new axle first. I'd be hesitant to stand or grind on what is essentially a giant axle nut, in the case of the screw-on pegs.
thanks 4 the help...i went to the bike shop today and they gave me a whole new bearing and the holders for it so its all fixed and good now :) also, he recommended i get these pegs that act as the nut...they arent as big as normal pegs but they work fine for me. thanks alot everybody! :D
